Should The U.S. Be Intervening In The Rahman Case In Afghanistan?
That's the question Brian Lamb is posing to listeners on C-SPAN's WJ this morning. What do DUers think? Personally, I believe we should stand back and let Afghanistan deal with this issue. Of course, I don't want Mr. Rahman to be executed and I hope that Karzai manages to solve this diplomatically by negotiating with the Mullahs conducting the trial, but I can see nothing positive coming out of open U.S. intervention.

1. i think we should be threatening the crap out of Karzai
And if it comes to it, I'd even support military action to rescue Rahman. Its a simple human rights issue to me.

2. Force of world opinion should be applied
I don't know what the best approach would be, but I sure hope that some way can be found to permanently destroy the idea that a particular religion is the ONLY true religion and worse that it's acceptable to kill those who find more resonance in a different belief system. It was horrible during the Inquisition and it is equally abhorrent under Islam. It's like a tribal BORG mindset that needs to make way for some cultural renaissance.

I'd like to see some alternative like banishment of the unbelievers in the short term, maybe by temporarily referring to them as "insane" as a face saving measure. Untimately, the quest for spiritual life should be like travelling across open borders without obstructions placed in the way.

3. I, of course don't want the dude to die
But where was all of Georgie's concern when the people of New Orleans were drowning and where is his concern when Americans get taken and whacked in Iraq or elsewhere. He don't deal with no terrorists, but he sure wants to deal with something that makes his fundy base froth.
I would be tempted to let Afghanistan and Iraq do their own thing and hopefully the human rights issues will sort out. The *ush regime sets a terrible example of how humans should be treated.
Sic the dogs on em, dubby and smoke em out. :argh:

8. What the USA believes in doesn't matter!!!!
Why should it matter what the USA believes in? Most of the Afghan government positions are filled by former warlords or their followers, as is the Afghan Parliament!!!

This has never been about democracy, our troops are dying to keep a puppet propped up, unless you really believe that Karzai is his own man?

By the way the US has a history of supporting tyrants and dictators, just look at some of the leaders in South and Central America in the 60's and 70's, and the government of South Vietnam wasn't exactly all warm and fuzzy either, and then there's Saudi Arabia!!!!!

So you see we the "Shining Beacon on the Hill", has supported more then our fair share of tyrants since WWII, I'm not sure but I think we've probably even beat out the old USSR when it comes to supporting regimes that are led by dictators!!!!

5. The new Afghani constitution is based on Sharia law?
How did we let that happen? Isn't that basically taking the Taliban and replacing them with more of the same?

7. How did we let it happen?
This is one of those concepts of creating a sovereign nation, that enacts laws that the elected representatives of the people can agree upon.

And the US stood back and watched as it happened, and did nothing!!!!

That is why our troops have been and are dying, so that the Afghan people can be ruled by a kindler, gentler vesion of the Taliban.

6. No
I too believe that Afghanistan should deal with this based on their laws, after all isn't that what getting rid of the Taliban was all about.

Wasn't the idea to create a sovereign nation, a nation where the representatives elected by the Afghan people were responsible for enacting a Constitution and laws that were in compliance with the beliefs of the Afghan people.

The other thing that I don't understand, is why the Christian Right is up in arms about this, when most of those on that side would love to see Biblical laws become the laws of the United States.

But what do you expect from hypocrites?
