Battle to overturn S. Dakota abortion law begins
SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (Reuters)

Abortion-rights supporters planned to launch an attack on Friday on a new South Dakota abortion law designed as a direct challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion 33 years ago.

An abortion-rights coalition, South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, said it would lay out its strategy to take down the law in mid-morning news conferences in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

The Sioux Falls local newspaper reported that the group would announce a petition drive to overturn the law through a referendum in November. The group has not publicly detailed its strategy, but participants in the campaign have said that a referendum had advantages over a lawsuit.

"When you take things to the courts you don't have the opportunity to engage the public in the process. You don't have the ability to build a movement," said Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Kate Looby.

1. I want to see all those puke brained, Neanderthal, moronic, sick
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 10:36 AM by rpannier
narcissistic, loser elected representatives to hold a rally in South Dakota supporting the new law. I want them to prove to me that I've been wrong about them for the last twenty years. I have said since I was 16 that a majority of the anti-choice politicians are just trying to get votes. They really don't believe what they're saying. This is their opportunity.
Come on you droning, whining, pathetic excuses for human beings...stand up, be counted. Show the world that you haven't been playing the American Taliban for the blind, morons they are. Say loud and proud,
"I'm opposed to women's choice and I'm proud."
If they won't do that they need to STFU!

2. Does anyone know if they still want to make this a
in state battle only. Are they discouraging out of state donations and help?

If they are successful, this will deter other states from doing the same.

3. Interesting, trying to keep it away from the crimson courts.
I think that is a great strategy, but how will theyprevent a private person from going to court and initiating a chain of events that will put it in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court?

6. It doesn't matter.
The referendum would come before any ruling. An injunction is a given.

4. A referendum would be interesting...
See how in touch (or out of touch), South Dakota leaders are with the voters!

5. I agree with a referendum.
Especially with the lack of consideration for rape and health of the woman. I think it could really be overturned. THAT would be a victory for the reproductive rights movement that is truly monumental.
