Ann Parr

Ann Parr celebrates the life and times of the late photographer and director Gordon Parks. In her children's book, "Gordon Parks: No Excuses," the author explains how he became the first black photographer to be hired by Life Magazine and how his success was due to both his courage and compassion. Gordon Parks died on March 7th at the age of 93. During the presentation Ms. Parr reads a portion of the book while showing both the illustrations and the photography of Gordon Parks. This event was hosted by Watermark Books & Café in Wichita, Kansas.

Ann Parr returned to school at the age of 58 to earn her Master of Fine Arts in writing for children from Vermont College in 2004. "Gordon Parks: No Excuses" is her first book.

Alan Jacobs is professor of English and director of the Faith and Learning Program at Wheaton College in Illinois. His essays include "Shaming the Devil: Essays in Truthtelling" and "A Theology of Reading: The Hermeneutics of Love."

Governor Lady: The Life and Times of Nellie Tayloe Ross

"Governor Lady" is Teva Scheer's biography of Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first woman governor in the United States. The author chronicles the life of Mrs. Ross and describes her as an "accidental trail blazer" who took office after the death of her husband. The former Wyoming Governor (1924-1926) went on to become the first woman to be named Director of the US Mint in 1933. She was also appointed as a vice-chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1928 and directed the party’s women’s division. Ms. Scheer reads several passages from her book, including one that involves Governor Ross’ grandson, Bradford Ross, who was in attendance. This event was hosted by the Wyoming State Museum.

Teva Scheer is an adjunct faculty member at the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado in Denver.

Professor Cumings argues that Americans receive a very distorted picture of North Korea form the U.S. media and says that the North Korean government would like to normalize relations with the United States, but their efforts have been twarted by hawks in the Bush administration. He also talks about what the future might look like if there was a unification between North and South Korea. Professor Cumings takes questions from the audience following his remarks.

Bruce Cumings is a professor of history at the University of Chicago. He's the author of "The Origins of the Korean War," "War and Television," and "Parallax Visions: American-East Asian Relations at the End of the Century."

Matthew Spalding and Daniel Dreisbach join Michael Novak and Jana Novak, co-authors of "Washington’s God" to discuss the religious life of George Washington. In their book, the Novaks say George Washington was a Christian, not a deist, as historians typically characterize him. The father/daughter team examines Washington’s religious pronouncements in an attempt to establish that George Washington did in fact worship the God of the Bible and did not embrace the idea of the absentee creator. Matthew Spalding, director of the Heritage Foundation and an expert on American political history and religious liberty joins the panel to offer his opinion, as does Daniel Dreisbach, who is a professor in the School of Public Affairs at American University. Includes Q&A.

Michael Novak is the George Frederick Jewett Chair in Religion, Philosophy and Public Policy at the American Enterprise Institute. He is a former U.S. ambassador and the author of "The Universal Hunger for Liberty" and "The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism." Wesley Clark, the editor of the Great Generals series.

Alan Axelrod is the author of "Patton on Leadership," "Encyclopedia of Wars" and "The Macmillan Dictionary of Military Biography." Gen. Wesley Clark retired from the U.S. Army as a four-star general after thirty-four years of service. He is the author of "Waging Modern War: Bosnia, Kosovo and the Future of Combat." He was a presidential candidate in 2004.

Tying Religion and Politics to an Impending U.S. Decline

Kevin Phillips, a former Republican strategist who helped design that party's Southern strategy, made his name with his 1969 book, "The Emerging Republican Majority," which predicted the coming ascendancy of the G.O.P. In the decades since, Mr. Phillips has become a populist social critic, and his last two major books — "Wealth and Democracy" (2002) and "American Dynasty" (2004) — were furious jeremiads against the financial excesses of the 1990's and what he portrayed as the Bush family's "blatant business cronyism," with ties to big oil, big corporations and the military-industrial complex.

His latest book, "American Theocracy," the concluding volume of this "trilogy of indictments," ranges far beyond the subject suggested by its title — an examination of the religious right and its influence on the current administration — to anatomize a host of economic, political, military and social developments that Mr. Phillips sees as troubling indices of the United States' coming decline. The book not only reiterates observations made in "Wealth and Democracy" and "American Dynasty," but also reworks some of the arguments made by the historian Paul Kennedy in "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers," dealing with the role that economic factors play in the fortunes of great powers and the dangers empires face in becoming financially and militarily overextended.

All in all, "American Theocracy" is a more reasoned (and therefore more sobering) book than "American Dynasty," substituting copious illustrations and detailed if sometimes partisan analysis for angry, conspiratorial rants. But if Mr. Phillips does an artful job of pulling together a lot of electoral data and historical insights to buttress his polemical points, he also demonstrates a tendency to extrapolate — sometimes profligately — from the specific to the general, from the particular to the collective, especially when making his prognostications of impending decline.

As he's done in so many of his earlier books, Mr. Phillips draws a lot of detailed analogies in these pages, using demographics, economic statistics and broader cultural trends to map macropatterns throughout history. In analyzing the fates of Rome, Hapsburg Spain, the Dutch Republic, Britain and the United States, he comes up with five symptoms of "a power already at its peak and starting to decline": 1) "widespread public concern over cultural and economic decay," along with social polarization and a widening gap between rich and poor; 2) "growing religious fervor" manifested in a close state-church relationship and escalating missionary zeal; 3) "a rising commitment to faith as opposed to reason and a corollary downplaying of science"; 4) "considerable popular anticipation of a millennial time frame" and 5) "hubris-driven national strategic and military overreach" in pursuit of "abstract international missions that the nation can no longer afford, economically or politically." Added to these symptoms, he writes, is a sixth one, almost too obvious to state: high debt, which can become "crippling in its own right."

Activist Angela Davis has written a new book titled, "Abolition Democracy: Beyond Empire, Prisons, and Torture." Professor Davis and her co-author Eduardo Mendieta make the case that racial persecution is still a prevalent notion in the United States prison system. She spoke at the 29th Annual Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Angela Davis is the author of numerous books including "Blues Legacies and Black Feminism" and the forthcoming "Prisons and Democracy." She has been an activist on behalf of political prisoners as well as an active member several different groups aimed at prison reform. Ms. Davis is currently a professor of history of consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Edwin Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC argues that Americans need to reacquaint themselves with traditional conservative values. During his talk Mr. Feulner explains what these values are, and outlines a plan to restore them. He says that Americans should ask themselves six questions when deciding whether a policy should be supported. (1) Is it the government's business? 2) Does it promote self-reliance? 3) Is it responsible? 4) Does it make the country more prosperous? 5) Does it make us safer? 6) Does it unify us?). During the Q&A portion of this event, Mr. Feulner talks about the recent controversy over the Dubai ports deal and President Bush's immigration policy. This event was co-hosted by the Heritage Foundation and the Manhattan Institute in New York City.

Edwin Feulner has held many positions in government, including serving as a consultant to President Reagan and, most recently, as a consultant to the Gingrich-Mitchell Congressional Task Force on U.N. He also talks about the repression faced by Kurds living in Turkey and the clashes between the Kurds of Turkey and the Kurds of Iraq. The talk was hosted by MIT's Center for International Studies. Mr. Mullane details some of the challenges NASA faced with the space shuttle program including how to address the concerns of his female colleagues. Throughout her discussion, she describes the day-to-day activities in the internment camp and reads various excerpts from her book. The author displays a poster announcing the removal of Japanese Americans as well as the tag she was issued upon arrival at the first camp. Ms. Gruenewald compares the government's handling of civil liberties since September 11, 2001 and the way she and other Japanese Americans were treated in the 1940’s. This event was hosted by the Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, Washington.

Mary Matsuda Gruenewald was sent to an internment camp for Japanese-Americans when she was seventeen. She worked as a registered nurse for more than twenty-five years and established the Consulting Nurse Service within the Group Health Cooperative in 1971. Ms. Gruenewald received an Asian American Living Pioneer Award in 2003. "Looking Like the Enemy" is her first book.
