Murtha's challenger: 'standing by our fighting men and women'

WASHINGTON -- A Republican critical of Rep. John Murtha's call for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq announced this week that she will challenge the longtime Pennsylvania Democrat.

Diana Irey a commissioner in Washington County, Pa., 73-year-old Murtha has "drifted further and further from the ideals that made this country great." Irey, 43, said she is "standing steadfastly by our fighting men and women."

Murtha, a Vietnam veteran and retired Marine colonel, stunned Washington in November when he called for U.S. troops in Iraq to return home immediately, arguing that the military is suffering and the future of the nation was at risk.

Murtha, who was first elected in 1974 and has been one of his party's most hawkish members, had voted to give President Bush the authority to use military force against Iraq.

7. I live in Virginia but

Ive known about Murtha and that district for a while, its where my grandparents grew up, its kind of a financially down district sad to say and Murtha is high on appropirations, plus he's a solid liberal economically and more moderate socially, a perfect fit for it. The republicans would be pretty stupid if they put in a lot of money in to defeating him.

bush contends that the reason people think Iraq is such a mess is because of "media hype"

this implies that things are really better than we think in Iraq and all the "good news" is not being reported
