Who is protecting the affected people/victims in Dafur?

I've been checking sites about the genocide in The Sudan and learned that Arab militiamen are in an ethnic cleansing press. The Sudanese govt is supposed to protect them, but reports are that the uniformed military is also engaging in rape, murder, pillaging and other atrocities.

My question is, Who do the victims/affected people have to protect them? From what I have been reading, NOBODY is truly dedicated to protecting them! This is terrible and the US and UN are turning a blind eye as they did in Rwanda.

If the Bu$h administration saw fit to invade Iraq to free its people from an evil and repressive regime, why are they not even acknowledging the horrors that are happening as we speak? Many of those killed, tortured....are Christians. Am I wrong here?

If the Bu$h regime really wants to do some good for humanity, wouldnt they send aid and protection to poor Christians being persecuted in Dafur?

So who is responsible for protection of those being killed, raped and maimed?

1. Short answer? Nobody.

The African Union's got troops there, but they don't have a mandate to act on it. The United Nations could get the authority for a peace enforcement operation, but the United States refuses to give them permission to because of US policy towards genocide since the sixties or seventies.

If Bu$h is the "Compassionate Christian", as he claims to be, he'd send a peackeeping force to Dafur.
At the very least he could address the UN!

7. The UN can't act without the UNSC's permission

Which effectively means the United States' permission. If the rest of the security council voted troops into Darfur to halt the Sudanese government's actions there, the US would veto it.

It's not a thing with Bush in particular - although he isn't exactly helping it. The US has had a policy of refusing to act (wilfully, not simply standing aside) in genocide cases for decades.

Rwanda was terrible, but I fear that unless someone puts a stop to this, Dafur will yeild millions of dead.

i can't fired up over the idea of sending my non-african troops there, no matter whats happening, the only thing i can think of is keeping an eye on your local friendly weapons manufacturer and putting pressure on them not to sell weapons to the sudanese government and its paramilitaries...

the colour of whoever is sent in to to help the african population of Sudan matters. They desperately need help against the arab militia to prevent an horrendous act of genocide.

6. I'd write to someone in Congress

The head of the International Relations Committee in the house is my Congressman Frank Wolf. He's a Republican yes but he's very involved on genocide issues, he gave a presentation on Darfur when he visited my high school last year and he seems to care genuinely about what is happening. You may get a response too if you write, I emailed the office last year when I had to research the possiblity of a draft. If you prefer a democrat, try Tom Lantos, hes the RMM of the committee and he's an interesting guy.

I cant believe that there is a virtual media blackout on this issue. CNN is running stories on a dead pastor and live cockroack pins for the Ladies.
