I was getting lunch when a guy came in the restaraunt asking if anyone had jumper cables. Being as I never leave home without them I said yes and we went out to his car.

He noticed the anti-W sticker I had and commented that he had a lot of friends who were Repub who were feeling that way. I mentioned that I've always been Against W, and I really don't trust Bush or any of his cronies.

He laughed and said that he volunteered on both Bush campaigns, but still supported him. I asked why, despite all that's gone on - and his reply?

"I never back down - it's just unconscionable for me. Republicans have to stand by their man no matter what..."

11. What Id want to ask .... can he support /stand by his man but still

do his civic duty and SPEAK UP about things that need fixin... how is that "backing down"? He doesn't have to join the democratic party or get anti-Bush bumperstickers or watch Michael Moore movies ... just do some simple time honored things like writing or phoning representatives.

12. I think politics is about branding and identity

Once people identify with a party, you can scream about issues until you're blue in the face. Repubs identify themselves as tough, moral, and rational, Democrats identify themselves as smart, tolerant, and idealistic.

Democrats can either work hard to better brand themselves as something more Americans will "buy", or wait for a few issues to make someone go against their own self-identity. I think the latter is highly unlikely.

Suppose you have an employee that's stealing from the till and starting fights. Are you going to turn your head and pretend he's not doing it? Yet this is exactly what Bush is doing, and RWers conveniently forget that Bush works for US, not the other way around.
