away from the Censure Motion. I first called Kohl's office and was told he will not support the motion. When I asked why, I was told because it "needed further investigation". My response was what is there to investigate when the president admits that he broke the law on warrant-less eavesdropping and will continue to do so. I do agree an investigation on what further laws the administration broke in making use of the information that was gathered is needed but that is not the point of the Censure Motion.
I then asked if not now when will this President be held accountable to the law and brought up the news of the Patriot Act signing statement. The staffer was confused and could not answer. Based on his long silences, he was either embarrassed or taking other calls.
Then I called Senator Kennedy's office. This time I asked how Kennedy intended to vote on the censure motion when it came up before the judiciary committee. His staffer did not expect this to happen. We then got into the discussion why and I was told that there just was not a lot of support for Censure. I pointed out that while is clearly the case inside the beltway it is not the case in the rest of the country. The staffer then said that at times the Senate has to consider implications other than the will of the constituents! Then we got on to when and what will the Democratic Party stand for... No answer from the staffer.
Senator Feingold's office says Censure will come up before the judiciary committee so after thanking the Senator again for the motion, I tried calling Specter's office but gave up after several busy signals. Busy signals I always find to be positive.
And oh, I did call Reid's office who immediately wanted to know what state I was from and asked to put me into voice mail since the phones were overloaded. Another positive sign.
So in support of the orginal post, please do call your Senators and those on the Judiciary Committee to let them know that contrary to the weak-kneed DLC Consultants, there is support for the law to be followed, even by and especially by the President.
