When I think of the Red Cross I think about large scale disasters (be they natural or man made). But I learned something yesterday that took me by surprise. They are there for everyone...no matter what scale of your disaster.
My sister and her husband called me last night to say their house had burned. It was a total loss and unfortunately their pets were inside and did not make it. You know who was first on the scene with assistance besides relatives and neighbors? It was the Red Cross. They provided a debit card to purchase clothing and food (I don't know how much it was worth) and when the insurance company showed up (after the Red Cross), they put them up for 2 weeks in a hotel.
So their "stuff" will be replaced, they will get a new house, the lose of the pets is by far the worst part. But at the end of the day, I was amazed that the Red Cross was the first to show up in this small West Texas town to help out a single family within hours of their disaster.
Why aren't they running FEMA ? You can guess where my next charitable contributions are going.
