As you probably know. Authorities in thr former Soviet republic of Belarus, a country that has what many call Europe's last dictator, cracked down on demonstrators camped out in the center of the capital city of Minsk last night. The demonstrators are protesting the recent presidential election of authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko. Lukaschenko has ruled Belarus with an iron fist since 1994. Literally turning back the clock on reforms and democratic process started when Belarus became independent.
The leaders of the EU countries and even Bush (????) have condemned the Belarussian government for the election irregularities and the crackdown.
I think it is just hypocritical that the Bushites are calling for new elections and condemning the Belarussian government when they have been accused of pretty much the same thing! However, if you know anything about Belarus, I do sympathize with the opposition's cause there. Lukashenko is a tyrant and has held Belarus back because of his Soviet-inspired policies. I hope the people will continue to fight.
