The problem is not immigration it's POPULATION!!!
When are people going to start realizing this?

There are too many fucking people in the world, and no one wants to discuss it. They just keep having babies.

2. I think the real problem is so few of the people use so much.
We in the developed world are a small fraction of the world's people, but we consume just about all the resources. This is especially true here in the US, where we're less than five percent of the world's population and we account for 25% - 30% of total world consumption. One American is probably worth about 20 Chinese people.

There's enough food in the world for everyone. There's enough clean water. There are enough materials with which to cloth and house everyone. We're just not sharing enough. Our gluttony is a bigger problem than the world's population. That's my take.

4. Agree and Disagree...
You're right about Americans consuming too much, but that's a different issue. I'm talking about the number of people in the whole world.

The number of people in the world is around 6 and half billion.

In 1920 it was around 2 billion.

5. Any couple who produces more than about 2.1 kids...
Any couple who produces more than about 2.1 kids is part of the
problem. Have more kids than that, and the world's population
inevitably rises exponentially.

At some point, Green Revolutions or no, humans will start
starving and/or dying of thirst.

12. Blame the tv and video game industries.
Nintendo can whine about innovation all it wants ( http://www.betadot.com/news/2006/97/nintendo-revolution.html )

But the reality is, these things use energy for no effective reason.

Trouble is, they need energy and suckers customers to keep up their profits.

Nix the energy and the indolent and a lot of the problem disappears.

Pity then that Japan, China, India, et al, are starting to see the mindslobbery consoles in larger volumes too. (and for the usual complaint of how corporations can make a buck by reducing wages significantly, it's not stopping people...)

7. Nature has a nasty way of correcting imbalances.
There is a very long list of species that didn't adapt to their environment. Our species is unique only because we like to think we are.

8. BEWARE: Immigration is THE issue for 2006/2008
Edited on Sat Mar-25-06 09:36 AM by kurth
In this age of professional/high tech jobs getting outsourced to India and China, and low tech/menial jobs in the U.S. being given to illegal Mexicans and other Hispanics, I suspect that most Americans are against illegal immigration.

The only people who benefit from illegal immigration are corporations and business owners, and of course the illegals themselves.

"Traditional" conservative Republicans are firmly against illegal immigration, and if they run against a Democrat who advocates the status quo, they'll win. EASILY.

Just like the gay marriage issue in 2004. Except that illegal immigration actually affects people's lives - people see it as an everyday threat - therefore it is a REAL issue which cannot be ignored.

23. You're 100% correct
The Republicans will push the issue until the election is over. They are grabbing at it now because everything else they touch is ****ed up. If they keep the slimmest of margins in the Congress they will continue on with the Rape of America. They will forget their "No alien left behind rhetoric."

Dem's have to set the debate. Push the issues that matter to Democrats.

Saying No to the Drug Companies.

ie The Patriot Act should be called what it is "The Bill of Rights Abandonment Act" , The ERISA should be called "Citizen Surveillance Act", not the Terrorist Surveillance act. Just look at the truth table on that one.

There are 4 cases for telephone interception:

1. Citizen talking to Citizen
2. Citizen talking to Possible Terrorist
3. Possible Terrorist talking to Citizen
4. Possible Terrorist talking to Possible Terrorist

Note that 3 cases out of 4 involve Citizens.

We have to take control of these issues, or like you said, we're sunk.

24. Definitely - this is the GOP's secret weapon - demonizing illegals
Edited on Sat Mar-25-06 05:32 PM by standup
but if Democrats embrace illegals, they will be on the losing side. Illegals are hurting, not helping, American communities across this country (they help corporations and companies keep their wages down, that's just about the only thing they help). What Democrats ougth to do is to put the blame where it belongs: the GOP administration and the GOP congress for failing to control our borders (this in spite of 9/11!!!)

What's the name of that guy who's running for office and has the wife who's addicted to being pregnant? Dugger? Is that it? 17 kids?
And I know a young woman who must be in competition with her mom, because she just had her 1st kid, and her mom is pregnant again with Nr. 14... Why? Need that many kids to help with the Amway business?

Selfish people who try to justify their pathology by insisting they have a "Warrant from GAWD" to "Go forth, be Fruitful, and Multiply". Goes along with the "Crunch all you want, Jeebus will make more" theology.

13. What is the solution?
Obviously, no one wants Government to be so intrusive that it tells people how many children to have...

The one thing we DO know is that we can't let nature solve the problem for us. As rational beings, we have a moral obligation to save ourselves, before some icky Malthusian check happens...

Again, I ask... What is the solution?

I hope, for the good of humanity, someone has an answer this century.

19. There is none
Like you said, nobody wants government to do it. Everybody enjoys the things we use, especially the people who haven't gotten a chance to use them.

Everything has a life cycle. Lives, empires, civilizations, stars. They all start small, grow, mature, then die.

Edited on Sat Mar-25-06 10:03 AM by HypnoToad
Guess where the money is?

Not the US...

Put ALL the pieces together and you'll see something frightening indeed. It's pretty obvious once you piece everything together... energy, offshoring, population, the pursuit of wealth, I could go on... (the only question is, will India and China allow any Americans do emigrate... even the ones who gave them all the shiny new jobs...)

Except I am not frightened. I know my place and I know my time. I'm going to live happily and constructively while I can. There's no point to being riled up over something that cannot be changed. Or, try to convince me I should be.

this is about politics and economics.

If Dennis Kucinich was leader of the entire world, we could house and feed the entire world population in the state oh Wyoming. The ability is there, but the economics have not been sufficiently humanized.

18. The planet could support at least 10 billion...
people, but I doubt many of us would like the conditions we survived in.

Malthus, the Club of Rome... there have been Jeremiads about exploding population in the past that have been proven wrong, but eventually we'll populate everything else off the planet.

South America and Asia are rapidly gaining on us in standards of living, and they all want cars, housing, and appliances that meet Western and Japanese standards. Eventually, Africa will catch up, too.

Think about the price of gas when 600 million Chinese and 400 million Indians buy cars just when crude production is declining. And that's saying nothing about the environmental problems running those cars and building and heating their new houses.

Something's gotta give, and it will be a combination of our standard of living and the planet's ecosystems as we build and grow food for everyone.

We're not supposed to talk about sensible methods of birth control and family planning.

I saw a young lady yesterday taking up half of a very busy public bathroom, changing her baby's diaper, with two little ones waiting and grandma doing nothing to help except take up space and she was pregnant with another one. The girl was totally washed out and it was apparent that she couldn't handle the three she had already. What is with these people?
