Molly Ivins greatest line puts it to the homophobes.

I was reading a Molly Ivins column and something she said made me chuckle and recall one of the best lines she had ever written.

Her book, "Molly Ivins Can't Say That, Can She?" is a collection of various columns she's written over the years. She writes for many different publications, some of which allow obscenity.

The column I recalled was one about the Texas legislature passing an anti-homosexual law. I can't remember her exact wording, but this is pretty close:

"Right after the vote, the two men who had sponsored it shook hands. By doing so, they broke the law they had just passed that made it a crime for a prick to touch an asshole."

You just gotta' love Molly Ivins.

coming from molly.
She is, indeed, a national treasure.
Now, a serious question-- Nearly half the population of the US holds an opinion of her diametrically at odds with that of the people of compassion.
These people seem totally serious and sincere about their opinions.
Despite a number of outreach efforts, the progress of presenting and having seriously considered an alternative point of view is progressing all too slowly.
Perhaps a glacial pace will ultimately succeed, but I fear that circumstances are racing toward a confrontation that will turn the world into something totally unrecognizable, long before a background of understanding is accomplished.
What other paths, besides derision, scorn, and confrontation with ethical hypocrisy, will open communication better?
Although Molly nails it, every time, nothing of substance gets created between us. What we have is a general tightening of our collective group hug on this side, along with an enhancement of our view that they-over yonder-are blindly in the grip of greed, power lust, and criminal impunity, while they consider us as weak, conciliatory, vichy panderers, not worth the sweat off their manly, self confident whatevers.
What to do next?

10. I suppose we have to accept the fact that we're living in a replay of

the dark ages. And it just might get worse before it gets better. Fundies aren't burning witches at the stake, yet; women can still vote, for the time being; homosexuality isn't punishable by death in this country, at least not right now; and aside from a few states, you can still legally buy contraceptives, masturbate, and even get copies of "Catcher in the Rye," "The Diary of Anne Frank," and "Catch 22" along with many other books that the barbarians are trying to banish.

Assuming the maniacs don't blow this planet up, humanity will eventually come to a new age of enlightenment. It may not be in our lifetimes, but all we can do is keep fighting the good fight knowing that in the future, we'll be viewed as having been on the right side of history. It may not be much solace, or satisfy our desire for justice, but for now, it's all we've got.

Except for one thing. I seem to recall a few dragged to death or impaled on barbed wire fences who might disagree with homosexuality not being punishable by death. I get the point--just being picky, I guess.
This is not a day that sees me in my usual sunny, optimistic attitude.
