Good. Now please go to this thread link, read it, kick it, recommend it, donate, think about it, acknowledge the efforts therein, volunteer, or one or all of the above in any combination you desire.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x761460Please notice the thread each day, "40 ways in 40 days: Remembering the Survivors of Katrina", it's different each day. (You can tell by the number at the end of the thread title.)It--and the entire series--represents weeks of research and thought by DUer Plaid Adder that has been put into ways to assist groups in the Gulf Coast region who are helping Katrina survivors to carry on one more day, return home, and to rebuild their lives. the range of info presented in the series is an education into how daunting the task is, and how much stress and suffering our American neighbors endure.
If all you do is kick it, wonderful! If you think $5 is an embarrassment, but all you can afford, remember that there is no shame in giving, not ever.
I see other threads on DU that rapidly fill up with posts that excoriate others as not being "humanitarians" or "Liberals" because of dumb jokes about trailer parks, or use language in a way that they dislike.
Now I'm going to finger wag: if The "40 Days in 40 Ways" Series continues to sit like a plate of lox for hours on end, I'm going to be left to ponder the level of humanitarianism and liberalism on this board.
From a board such as DU, Plaid should actually be getting regular feedback from featured organizations commenting on the level of donations the series brings in. The thread should be on the greatest page within one hour and have 40 recommends. In your heart you know that's true, so make it happen. While I love the idea of $1,5000 worth of roses for the incomparable Ms. Helen Thomas, I just want to know: why we can't do both?
Angela Davis recently spoke of how the Media has created a false sense of closure regarding the plight of those who survived Katrina. To watch the "40 ways" thread limp along each day I have to wonder if DU hasn't fallen for the idea that the road is now smooth for The Gulf Coast, but I know better.
They will need us for years to come, let's start now to make it a habit--and continue on.:loveya:
