"Sucks To Be You", if you do not have blonde hair or blue eyes!
Excuse me if I am missing something, but I have not seen much on TV news concerning the missing of two Milwaukee children. Now, if it were two little white girls with blonde hair and blue eyes, would there have been more media coverage?

Again, I may be wrong! I may have missed it for one reason or another. Usually when I get home from work, which is around 5PM, I tune in to the local, then the national news. Since these children have turned up missing, I have heard little 15 sec. stories on it, then they move on.

Please let me know if I am overreacting.

Thank you

Police said Sunday the search for two boys who disappeared a week ago was turned into a criminal investigation.

Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz wouldn't reveal what prompted them to treat the case differently, saying it would compromise the investigation.

The change did not come because of one detail, she said, but an "amassing of information" through police canvassing the neighborhood, tips and leads.

Quadrevion Henning, 12, and Purvis Virginia Parker, 11, were last seen around 3:30 p.m. March 19, when they asked Henning's grandfather whether they could play basketball at a nearby park.

1. Well this is the first I've heard about it
If that is any kind of indicator of its apparent news value.

Gee I wonder why Fox news isn't devoting days ad nauseum to covering their abduction....

over the weekend. I don't know about today.

5. The coverage has been little to none...
You are not missing a thing....CNN may have covered it for 20 seconds...Rita Cosby the death Queen may have mentioned it...the Aruba story is still getting most of the airtime.

6. I've heard some stuff
Nancy Grace gave it some coverage. Alot of missing person cases don't get coverage, no matter what the race of the person is.

8. It's revolting that no amber alert was put out immediatly. Why?
This is disgusting. Can only imagine what their parents are going thru - as if having a missing kid is not enough.

24. One thing I don't understand about this is I
heard a representative from the Milwaukee Police dept. say they aren't treating this as a crime because there is no evidence a crime was committed. Two eleven year olds simply disappear and that's the best the police can do?

Sad to say but I suspect the situation would be handled very differently by the police and media if those were two white girls from the suburbs.

29. I live in Milwaukee; I get the impression the police are
not telling us the whole story. They keep saying they think someone "knows something" and isn't coming forward. They keep saying there's no evidence of a crime. So I wonder if they suspect the kids are hiding and someone is covering for them? Or are they using the media to try to bait someone? It's just weird and different than other missing persons type cases to me.

9. I live in Milwaukee and...
The local news starts with this story every day, and runs with it for around 5 minutes (which is quite a bit of news space).

but this is the local news.

If it weren't for the Tom Joyner Morning Show (radio) I would not have known about it. This is certainly not getting the attention Aruba is getting, and that story is a year old.

10. I've seen this story covered
everyday, and quite a few times a day. It was also on our local news quite a few times. Though I will say cable hasn't covered it near as much as MWW story of the month.

I tried finding some updates on it, other than the net and newspapers, but I had more success listening to the radio in my car.

Unlike other crimes, there's no parade of witnesses, no suspects, nothing. The detective was saying how frustrating it was because there were NO LEADS to chase.

they do the "bigger" stories and the more human interest is reapeated during the day. I've been on spring break and had the TV on quite a bit.

23. However
right now in Tallahassee there is a young, pregnant black woman who has been missing four four weeks. She is NOT getting the air time Lacy Peterson got, by any means.

So I'm not saying the media is color blind. But they are following up on these little boys.

28. Hey, I'm feeling you that.
I just wanted to throw this out there, and see if others are having less of an issue than I am as far as finding out the latest. Because, it seems like every time I come home something about Natalee Holloway is on.

Don't get me wrong, I really and truly hope they get to the bottom of what happened. But, she is not the only one!

I don't watch tv news and I haven't been keeping as up-to-the-minute as usual this week.

Seems pretty clear to me though, based on what others are saying here...

but the spotlight is also being shined upon the 24 year old woman locally who showed up after 10 years of living with a man who was keeping her captive for his sexual pleasure...

27. Diane Sawyer had time this morning to talk to Terri Schiavo's parents
Isn't that woman dead YET? She could have spent the time discussing these missing children.

Doesn't the MSM know that the U.S. now hates poor Natalee Holloway because of the overexposure of her case? It's almost like they're perpetuating racism by their bias. And why would they want to, ahem, do that?

it could help. Pray that it does.

I have to say that it all seems like a public service announcement...about that amount of energy and empathy.

32. Fine: "You are over-reacting."
The media cannot cover every crime, every maybe-crime, every tragedy, everywhere. Some grab our attention, perhaps for periods of time beyond rationality, who knows why.
As with movies/fiction, the lives of certain individuals stand for all of our lives, all of our fears.

And sometimes, 'tis pity 'tis, 'tis true, it's because the crime's locale is particularly "exotic" or hellish; e.g., Aruba for the former, and Abu Ghraib for the latter.
