Pro-Life Alert: Nude Britney Spears "Birthing" Sculpture Unveiled
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 01:27 PM by Blue Belle
http://www.salon.com/ent/col/fix/2006/03/27/mon/

<SNIP>The nude Britney birthing sculpture: Weird on so many levels it's difficult even to write about, an upcoming gallery show in Brooklyn, N.Y., called "Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston," centers around a large sculpture of a naked Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug. Capla Kesting Fine Art co-director Lincoln Capla -- tongue-in-cheek, it has to be assumed -- says, "A superstar at Britney's young age having a child is rare in today's celebrity culture. This dedication honors Britney for the rarity of her choice and bravery of her decision." (Speaking to Broadsheet, though, Capla and others seemed totally sincere.) The piece also tries, for reasons unclear, to tie itself to the antiabortion movement, proclaiming the sculpture to be "the first pro-life monument to birth." From the gallery's shudder-inducing press release: "Natural aspects of Spears' pregnancy, like lactiferous breasts and protruding naval, compliment a posterior view that depicts widened hips for birthing and reveals the crowning of baby Sean's head. The monument also acknowledges the pop-diva's pin-up past by showing Spears seductively posed on all fours atop a bearskin rug with back arched, pelvis thrust upward, as she clutches the bear's ears with 'water-retentive' hands."

Uhm... all I can say is, Sean Preston is gonna have enough problems... why do we need to lump this on the pile?

If this is so great and Xian they should show all angles? Just clinically interested.

17. Yep. Supposedly you can see the head crowning
:wtf:

I have nothing to add concerning the ick and weirdness factor of this but I am wondering why her butt is in the air. I've been through natural labor and the idea of doing it in that position seems uncomfortable and counterproductive.

Maybe Britney's jealous and angry at those who pose nude to protest her wearing fur coats, etc.

It seems to me she would have to consent to the artist using her image in this way. I haven't seen any info on that one way or the other.

Please Britt, sue this idiot "artist" for using your image for his financial gain.

Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 01:36 PM by rocknation
Artist Daniel Edwards' followup scuplture will be titled, "Nude Descending A Brass Pole."

"Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston,"...is purportedly an idealized depiction of Britney in delivery. Natural aspects of Spears' pregnancy, like lactiferous breasts and protruding naval, compliment a posterior view that depicts widened hips for birthing and reveals the crowning of baby Sean's head...The monument also acknowledges the pop-diva's pin-up past by showing Spears seductively posed on all fours atop a bearskin rug with back arched, pelvis thrust upward, as she clutches the bear's ears with 'water-retentive' hands.

I've never given birth, so I'm hardly an expert at this, but her position doesn't strike me as the best kind for giving birth.

25. I don't think it looks very "seductive" either. And having given
birth to four, I think that using that position would made giving birth a lot harder than it needs to be. This guy really has an imagination.

31. That's the "fuck me" position, not the birthing position
I know women who home birth, and the position may be on all fours, but it's a squat with the arms extended for support.

This babe is just trying to entice hubby to get a little prostaglandin action going to get her into labor, not trying to complete labor. This position is ridiculous for its stated purpose.

The artist should have consulted a WOMAN instead of a porn mag.

19. I thought she had the baby in a hospital at a convenient time with
plenty of drugs. Oh, and that figure in no way represents the pregnant figure of "Brit". So what are they trying to do, promote pregnancy and child rearing at an early age? No problem the dad reproduces like a bunny from one woman to another. Great role models. This proves these people are out of touch with reality and this is just one additional reason to fight for women to make this choice themselves.

28. Garbage.
Way to over-sexualize a woman's power to bring life into this world. In this sculpture, Britney is just a thing to be fucked and to pop out babies.

She's not my favorite icon on earth, but she still deserves respect as a mother and as a woman.

34. I'm not calling her a beacon of righteousness--
but what right do we have (and the artist, in particular) to consider her some kind of prostitute or whatever just bc her music is sexually provocative?

There are plenty of crappy pop songs and rap songs and hip-hop songs and rock songs out there that objectify women, and all of them are sad imo, but I think it wouldn't kill us all to be a little more respectful...

I don't know...

Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 02:50 PM by IselaB
it seems obvious to me now the work is satirical. The artist is trying to make a point with his deadpan assertion the work is pro-life, but the content of the work makes his meaning clear. Britney Spears giving birth and being a mother is one of the best arguments for abortion I'm aware of. I think the point is that motherhood isn't always the idealized situation some want to believe, and that they are being silly and superficial for insisting it is. Britney Spears is a symbol of the dim-witted notion that being a mother is always the best, most correct choice for a woman.

No Christian pro-lifer would support such a pseudo-pornographic work. The statue intermingles the prurient with the maternal to further make its point. I'm sure we're just dealing with a very droll artist here.

47. Hm, is "Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston" satire?
Looking at some other examples of the artist Daniel Edwards' art to see if he really does appear to have that much of a sense of satire:

An Indiana native, Edwards teaches at the Lyme (Conn.) Fine Arts Academy. He is a graduate of Herron School of Art at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and joined the school’s faculty after graduation.

He is known in Indianapolis for work such as the figures of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy for the sculpture in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park. He created the gold medal for the International Violin Competition

http://www.namos.iupui.edu/artists/artist.asp?entry_id=413

Including a work titled "Man with Cock" which I can't post here because their website has right-click disabled, but you need to go look at it....

And reading this article, where he appears to have done something in a similar vein before....

you're right, this is just a publicity stunt. We are so pwned. I totally believed this when I first saw it.

45. There's no way this is not a joke.
Spears is famous for having had the baby via C-section because she didn't want to go through labor--and for driving with the kid on her lap. The sculpture thus depicts something that everyone knows didn't happen. It seems to me like the point of this piece is that it's a pro-life *fantasy*--a kinky, twisted, squicky fantasy brought to you by people who want to see all female bodies as pregnant, submissive, and violable. If they're not letting people in on the joke, it's because they want to force the pro-life crowd to either embrace this horrible thing or become hypocrites by demanding that it not be shown. ("What's the matter? You don't think life is beautiful?")

Watch and see what happens,

The Plaid Adder
