What if Mayor Nagin just cancelled the N.O. election
And declared himself mayor for the indefinete duration of the emergency, claiming that the city was in trying times and needed absolute continuity of leadership right now, and dared the feds to do something about it.

I'm not saying I support this. I'm just throwing this out.

1. He can't do it--surely there are laws passed by legislative entities
that govern these things. He's mayor, not king. He has to work within a framework of laws and regulations.

Of course, if one wants to take one's cue from the Pretzledunce, that's sort of what he is doing....making shit up as he goes along, and writing cute little footnotes to laws passed by the legislature...

4. I've been saying that
Bush has that all planned . . . especially when they were pushing the "You can't change horses in midstream, you can't change Presidents in midwar . . ." argument in 2004.

So, we're likely still going to be in Iraq in 2008 (by Bush's own admission, too!), and also in the never-ending "War on Terror" . . . so all it takes is one tiny little "suitcase nuke" strategically placed, and boom (pun intended) . . . Constitution be damned . . .

5. Don't think he could really pull it off.
After all, despite much hinting, Guiliani did not remain as mayor of NYC after 9/11.

Actually, that day when I first heard that it was primary day in the city, my first thought was, Now I know the motive for the attacks.
