My friend Najeem used to get a deportation notice every year

and every year our friend's Dad (the city attorney) would go with him to Kansas City and plead his case.. Najeem had lived here for YEARS, but was still considered an "alien". We used to laugh hysterically when we were all drunk and he would start in.. "I AIN'T no ALIEN"..am I a little green guy with feelers?".. He went to college in my town, and everyone knew Najeem.. He was just a goofy college kid with a totally twisted sense of humor.. Was he a Muslim? (Back then they were MOslems)No one even knew..or CARED.. If he was, he was a pretty BAD one, if you get my drift.. He drove a '66 Chevelle SuperSport, and was the life of the party.

He actually wanted to join the military (in the height of Viet Nam) but was told that all his immigration problems made him undesirable. We had quite a party the night he got that letter.

My point is this..

In 1968, apparently the government knew exactly where visitors to our country were and kept tabs on them.. What changed?

The scary thing is that in today's climate, Najeem might have ended up in Guantanamo..

Wonder what ever happened to him...

He always said that he would marry a tall red-headed girl and be a real American.. Maybe he did :)

3. I remember when I was a kid ...

... there were always public service commercials on TV (in January, I believe), reminding immigrants (living in the US legally) to file a status report with the government. The form could be picked up at gov't offices and at the post office, and asked for your current address, phone number, place of employment, and any change in status (i.e. have you become a citizen since you last reported as an immigrant?).

I can't remember when those announcements disappeared, but a group of us were discussing this not long ago.

Wouldn't it seem WISE to do this nowadays? And with computer technology, it would be even easier to keep track of this information than it was in the past.

What gives?
