The Majestic (2001) - I recommend it. few spoilers.

Very good movie. Basically a redemption movie.

Set in 1951, and has quite a good speech when the lead character testifies in some of those political witch hunts. Wish I could remember it.

and a great example of why I think Jim Carrey is more versatile than anybody imagined. He's not only a talented physical comedian, but a talented dramatic actor. Oh, he's no Johnny Depp, but he's also not a one-trick pony.

3. it's a subtle movie compared to Good Night & Good Luck

I was thinking of GN&GL as I was watching The Majestic last night. The comparison in atmosphere of the two movies was quite striking, and of course the concluding scene in the taxi (as Peter Appleton is driven away from the hearing) is a very good lead-on to watching GN&GL :-) and the McCarthy hunts.

What I thought was interesting is that the Constitution that Adele passed onto Peter was 'a little red book' a la Mao's "little red book".

7. Good point about The Majestic being a good leadin for GN&GL

I saw The Majestic when it first came out in the theatre, and again on television. When I saw GN&GL, I thought to myself, wow, this really reminds me of The Majestic. The atmosphere of the two is quite different, but I think the message is the same: we have to stand up and fight against those who would take away our freedoms, even if that fight puts everything we have on the line.

12. "...they'll never take away our freedom"...?

One of the hardest thing is to recognise when the freedom is being taken away. What those two movies depict is that when it is being done gradually, it is difficult to recognise it.
I don't remember any movies being depicted of 1930's Germany when freedom was eroded there. Mind you, the 'Glory' of nationalism outshone the freedom-erosion.
The modern MSM are more 'adulation' than 'glorification'.
