Let's Annex the whole country of Mexico!
Let's make it a Commonwealth of the US! Then Americans can move down there, drive real estate prices thru the roof! We'll develope all the beach front properties and we will hire workers from CENTRAL AMERICA to do the jobs Mexicans won't do. Or an even better idea! We'll bring millions of immigrants from CHINA over to do the work Mexicans won't do!
Oh I took a poll at the factory I work at today! the question was, "Do you think Bush should be impeached if he gets his immigration program passed". Almost EVERYBODY raised their hand. I haven't seen people so furious since NAFTA was passed!

Dunno how the Mexicans will feel about it, though.

Americans Stake Claims in a Baja Land Rush

By TIM WEINER
FOREIGN DESK
The New York Times
Published: October 26, 2003, Sunday

NOPALÓ, Mexico -- Slowly but surely, acre by acre, Mexico's Baja Peninsula is becoming an American colony.

''For Sale'' signs are sprouting all over the 800-mile-long peninsula, offering thousands of beachfront properties. Americans are snapping them up. They have already created communities where the dollar is the local currency, English the main language and Americans the new immigrants transforming an old culture.

''Everything's for sale, every lot you can imagine,'' said Alfonso Gavito, director of a cultural institute in La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, a state with 400,000 citizens and some of the last undeveloped beaches in North America. ''It's like 20 years of changes have happened in three months.''

This new land rush, involving billions of dollars, tens of thousands of Americans, and hundreds of miles of coastline, is gaining speed despite the fact that Mexico's Constitution bars foreigners from directly owning land by the sea.

Mexico's government wants foreign capital as much as Americans want a house on the beach -- maybe more. So it worked around the Constitution. In 1997, it changed the law to allow foreign ownership through locally administered land trusts. A Mexican bank acts as trustee, the foreigner its beneficiary.

It took about four years before that new system worked smoothly. But now, most often, it does. One result has been a boom in migration, speculation and permanent vacation. ''It's human greed -- it's human nature,'' said David Halliburton, who owns a hotel outside Cabo San Lucas, on Baja's southern tip, where uncontrolled growth already strains the social fabric. ''The amount of money coming in here through overzealous developers and buyers is staggering.''

Uncontrolled growth is straining the social fabric! Gee, what a bummer!

26. Less than 100,000, and I don't think that counts Native Americans
In fact, the Mexcian government encouraged Anglos to move to Texas in order to develop the otherwise sparsely populated area.

30. They also tried to convert them to Catholicism
Edited on Tue Mar-28-06 05:07 PM by Ignacio Upton
(most of the settlers were Protestant and refused) and many of the people who fought against Santa Anna were Spanish-speaking Tejanos. There were Mexicans who fought for the American side during the Mexican War, and there were also Americans (well, technically Irish immigrants) who fought with Mexico, and they were called the San Patricios. There were Mexicans in other parts of the country (Mexico) that also wanted to break away. The Yucatan peninsula briefly formed its own independent country during the same period, and their flag was loosely based on ours.
BTW, America wasn't the only country that had designs on the southwest. Russia repeatedly tried to settle parts of the California coast during the 18th Century, and the British considered purchasing San Francisco (or the bay that became San Francisco.) The southwestern region of the period was a sparsely-populated region with few Mexican citizens, and quite a few Indian tribes, who themselves didn't always get along with the Mexicans, especially the white Spanish-descendant "Padres" in California.

39. Mexican land grants required settlers to be Catholic.
The settlers agreed, but many were lying. (Just as some brought in slaves, although slavery was illegal in Mexico.) Nobody was punished. Quite a few Real Catholics did settle here.

The Tejanos who fought for Texas--& survived--were "rewarded" with persecution by the Anglo Texans. We had missions in Texas, as well. Good or bad, they created a culture that remains highly influential in Texas. (Who invented ranching?) Have you ever been to San Antonio?

I know about the Mexican War & the San Patricios. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo guaranteed property & civil rights to Mexicans living in the lands that Santa Ana (merciless in victory, craven in defeat) ceded to the US. If there were relatively few living there, does that make it OK that the Treaty terms were broken by US settlers?

18. Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico gave up...
on that idea

Emperor Norton took the title "Protector of Mexico" because Mexico had, as he said, "beseeched him to rule over her." But this didn´t last long, he soon dropped his new title with the explanation that it was "impossible to protect such an unsettled nation."

25. I think it was tried once. It didn't work out very well.
I really wish our country would negotiate a real solution with Mexico. First we need to get them to make labor laws like ours that establishes minimum wages, and other labor reforms They need to make parents send their kids to school at least through high school. If they increase literacy, Mexican laborers won't be forced into a lifetime of poverty.

They need to have public schools for this. I don't know if they do, but the number of illiterate Mexicans I met in LA makes me think they don't. For sure the whole family is put to work as soon as they are able because the coolie wages makes it necessary for kids in poor families to work.

Then we would have to give them aid to put these reforms into place a sort of Marshall Plan for Mexico. If the poor Mexicans have a good life in Mexico, they won't want to come here, even if we beg them.

41. There are public schools in Mexico, but the system has problems.
It's dreadful that there's any illiteracy, but don't judge all Mexicans by the ones that you've met. I think the Cuban educational system is a better model than ours, though.

Let's get our own labor reforms online before we start preaching to Mexico.
