In the first quarter of 2006, MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann beat CNN's Paula Zahn Now in the 25-54 demographic. "This marks MSNBC's first quarterly primetime victory over CNN in the demo in almost five years (2Q01 MSNBC Investigates beat CNN at 8 p.m. ET)," MSNBC's press release said today.

Countdown averaged 164,000 total viewers in the quarter, up 41% from Q1 2005. Zahn averaged 158,000 demo viewers (down 33 percent), according to MSNBC. Bill O'Reilly averaged 450,000 in the demo (down 24 percent).

It should be noted that last night's interview was nearly two months old. It has been reported, albeit by a questionable source, that the delay was because of NBC in-office political bullshit.

In August he was reamed out by MSNBC president Rick Kaplan for his perhaps too graphic commentary about Peter Jennings' death. But last week Olbermann was reamed out by a higher-ranking TV exec — NBC News president Steve Capus — over his long interview with famous widower Michael Schiavo.

Capus scorched Olbermann for stepping on a carefully orchestrated Matt Lauer-"Today" show-"Dateline NBC" exclusive. The Lauer package was pegged to Dutton's March 27 release of "Terri: The Truth," Schiavo's tell-all about his late wife's short life, lingering death and accompanying media circus.

I hear Capus calmed down when Olbermann assured him he didn't know about the previous deal, because he landed his interview through direct contacts, not Dutton, and Schiavo never informed him.

Capus last week let Olbermann air highlights — in which the newly remarried Schiavo tears up and slams Republicans and President Bush for interfering. But MSNBC still didn't promote it outside the little-watched cable outlet. It will air an Olbermann-Schiavo special only after Lauer does his thing.

91. Sounds like a scheduling and booking spat more than a real fight.

Perhaps NBC isn't talking to MSNBC about a master booking schedule. This is an internal struggle.

Matt Lauer is certainly a higher-paid talent than Keith Olbermann, and Matt's shows are watched by more people. The network wants to insure it doesn't scoop itself. (I also saw Keith after Peter Jenning's death. What was there to complain about? Keith chose to show photos of a growth in his mouth which was removed, and vowed to QUIT SMOKING.)

Michael Schiavo appeared on CNN this week also, and not sure whether it was before or after Keith's interview aired.

These scraps go on all the time. I used to work with entertainment bookings at the NBC "Tonight" show. That was many years ago, before there were so many outlets. I'm sure it's a much more fierce struggle these days as everyone tries to book the same guests "first" and sometimes "exclusively."

By the way, Schiavo mentioned his new political website which looks interesting. I hope he becomes a spokesperson for death with dignity, unfettered by politics. IMHO, the right wing pro-life political zealots had no place in this situation last year.

I'm sure the battles go on, like Leno vs. Letterman, but this is NBC vs. MSNBC. Same company, same team. Or, at least, it should be the same team. Instead, the twits on the Today Show are doing crap like this or booking O'Reilly and ignoring (or even worse, disrespecting) Mr. Olbermann.

Sure, Lauer is a higher paid "talent" ("talent"! Now that's funny!), but they're all in the same company. Lauer isn't going anywhere, he's reached the peak. Thus, he could have recognized that he doesn't need the scoop and, since Mr. Olbermann got his interview through honest means, he could have shown the ability to be a team player. He still had the first network interview, but that wasn't good enough to feed the ego.

BTW, your time at the Tonight Show, was it before, during, or after Helen Kushnick?

101. I was there in the mid-1960s when Johnny Carson was still in NY.

I worked with his brother, Dick Carson, who was directing the program, and Skitch Henderson's group provided the music. Also worked in the news unit for a fellow named Gene ??? and God knows I've tried to recall his last name, but can't do it. I do remember the composer Robert Russell Bennett who composed the music for "Victory at Sea" -- he was a tall and elderly man and he called me ARIEL the water sprite. (He gave special names to all the production assistants in the unit.) Just a sweetheart of a man.

Looks as if Helen Kushnick was there in the 1970s with Jay Leno.

By 1971, I was back in Florida working as an unpaid screener (answers called before they go on the air) on Larry King's 11 PM to 5 AM overnight show at WIOD. When Larry was arrested a few days before Christmas 1971, I took over his show. I was there until April 1972, when Boston beckoned and I started on WEEI Radio, a CBS owned and operated station, on May 15, 1972. First female with a full time talk radio show in Boston SIX days a week from 10 AM to 2 PM and then took care of my two small kids, ages 1 and 2, as I was a single mother divorced from their father.

Reading your post reminded me that you probably have the type of entertainment history recollections that Mark Evanier often has in his blog. Not at all tabloidy, but usually fond anecdotes and memories of sometimes big stars and also behind the scenes folks, with equal respect for all who deserved it.

Kushnick (from the 90's, not 70's) elevated booking between Leno and Arsenio Hall to a war, until Ken Kragen went public and NBC forced her out. This was recounted in Bill Carter's "The Late Shift" book (also a movie).

105. The book and movie were both good

It was one case where the movie didn't lose much from the book (I think because Bill Carter was involved with the screenplay as well). The two actors playing Leno and Letterman start off being a distraction since the real hosts are so established in the psyche, but you learn to accept it since they aren't there for acting prowess but to move the plot along. Kathy Bates did a very convincing job as Kuchnick. And it was fun watching Rich Little do a role he's done for laughs so many times.

Every once in a while, I'll see it on one of the HBO channels, so you might catch it then.

Macy's had screens in the waiting areas of the women's fitting rooms. ALL the three screens had FOX on w/ a note on the bottom from management that FOX and a sports channel were the ONly channels allowed.

I fought Macy's to the top on this ( they claim they just want to provide public service ) and I ended up cancelling my credit cards and have boycotted them ever since.

I have been to a couple of restaurants here in SoCal, ( Black Angus is one ) where FOX was on in the bar and when I left I mentioned they should turn it off.

100. I've been watching Lou Dobbs, Keith O., and just to get a chuckle

at the end of the day, Jon Stewart, just for a chuckle. Lights out at 11:30 PM. Sometimes I see Bill Maher on HBO's on demand.

Also I tune in to Air America radio and read a couple of blogs, if I have a chance.

I feel pretty well informed with that schedule.

I really started watching Countdown in January (had seen it off and on prior to that), and the fact that it's sandwiched between Chris Matthews and Rita Cosby is highly appropriate---something completely different and unexpected between two shows that are total drivel.

I sometimes watch Olberman, but not consistently like I used to watch CNN. The format is a little strange for me, but at least he occasionally speaks the truth. I could have done without the Michael Jackson puppet show.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the percentage of viewers who CAN view the show actually viewing it (cleaning up the cable companies who don't offer it) and also how many businesses run FOX versus actual private viewers who opted to watch the show. Somehow I don't think the advertising is as effective if you are seeing a snippet of FOX while in the bank (or a restaurant with the sound turned down). I'd think the advertisers would want to know the difference.

I look forward to KO every night (or the next morning) and by capturing it on Tivo, I don't have to sit through the other crap waiting for KO to come on. It's bad enough having to endure the minute or two of Rita at then end of the KO recording. I usually try to hit delete before her annoying raspy voice comes on, usually going on about some sensationalized porn, child molester or rape victim story. When will MSNBC can her??

KO is the ONLY show on MSM news that I watch! I get all my news from him, Jon Stewart and Amy Goodman - and of course, the Internets.
