Introduced just six weeks before the election...that's 6 WEEKS not months
Thought it was a worthwhile reminder that the 1994 Contract with America was introduced to the public just 6 weeks prior to the Congressional election. While I agree that the Democrats need to be working on their own national strategy behind closed doors it is probably unwise to unveil it too soon before the election.

Nationalize this election on key issues and the opportunity for large pickups by the Democrats exists.

Of course, doing nothing to nationalize this election will force all races onto a local level resulting in a pickup minimal seats.

1. right, and it was well AFTER the republican landslide was obvious
it was a classic attempt to claim a mandate for an election that was, in most peoples' minds, already decided.
at least they did do it prior to the election.

exit polls showed VERY few people considered the contract on america when deciding how to vote, although it hardened views among those who had already made up their minds.

many people never even heard about it until well after the election.

5. Agreed
As I recall it was met with a dull roar of silence. The revisionist historians used it as leverage to ram otherwise unpalatable legislation down our throats.

Not to worry, "minimal seat pickup" is our middle name
I expect nothing more, I am so sorry, I wish I could,

8. Agree with you. People seem to minimize the effect of the Repub CWA
but, I was a regular voter and wasn't "into" politics during that time and I remember it.

I was also reading some Charlie Cook analysis talking about how the Democrats have the generic polls going their way but to really capitalize on this trend they need to move it to a national referendum rather than allowing it to remain disjointed local contests.
