I live in the reddest part of Illinois, except Springpatch (our capital), and I have not seen one, repeat, NOT ONE "W" sticker for more than 6 months. If I recall, he received 76% of the vote in '04 in my area. Today, I hear talk about impeachment.

In your state, do you still see "w" stickers, or are they all scraped off by now?

6. I see some in the red GA county where I work , mostly on SUVs

and I also see them on frat boys' SUVs in the college town where I live. Soccer moms and men in SUVs have the W04 sticker too. Some contractors and farmers in the rural red areas have the "Bush-Cheny Farm & Ranch Team" bumper stickers.

I must say that in the last 9 months or so, the number of stickers has gone to almost none. :)

I split my time between Champaign-Urbana and a small town in east central IL, and I see more Kerry stickers than W.

BTW, no way is Springfield redder than southern Illinois (by which I mean south of I-70, not south of Chicago), with the exception of the Metroeast St. Louis suburbs and maybe college towns like Carbondale. Some of those counties south of Effingham voted for ALAN KEYES. Talk about WACKJOB.

34. The myth of red vs blue and the importance of the "purple" voter

I'm from central Illinois and my home county voted for Bush both times and Clinton both times. Red vs blue is a very deceptive meme in most parts of Illinois (I daresay the entire country); purple, or swing areas, is a far more apt description. Basically, people are not political, and they will vote for the president if there isn't any big scandal or reason to vote against him. War also clouds people's eyes and appeals to their inner nationalist, and that's true for a lot of naive people, expect for those who are politically active or those who understand the true cost of war.

That's why I hate a lot of the animosity I see on DU and elsewhere towards "red" areas - it is foolish, not to mention political suicide, to write off entire swaths of the country because they voted for Bush in 2004. They CAN be reached, and the continuing disasters with the war, Katrina, wiretapping, the Dubai ports deal, Abramoff, Rove, and other scandals which are FINALLY getting MSM coverage are making a lot of "average Joes" angry at the Bush administration. It's exactly why the MSM failed to report on these events in 2004 when it might have swung some votes. Most people dislike and distrust politics and trust what is in their daily news to be true, and if they hear nothing bad about George Bush or nothing bad about the Iraq war and they are spoonfed lies that the war was waged for democracy or the safety of America, they will vote for Bush because they want to support the commander in chief. It's not a liberal/conservative split so much as an overwhelming amount of political apathy and ignorance of the true news, and it's distressing - however, it is heartening that we are NOT, for the most part, dealing with ideological conservatives so much as people who are truly ignorant of the facts. After all, the ignorant can be educated, but the ideologically rigid are rarely moved.

Sorry for the long dissertation, and I am in no way implying that you make such sweeping generalizations about "red areas." But it's important for political activists to understand why people such as central Illinoisans voted for Bush, and it's not deeply-held loyalty to the Republican party, but rather ignorance, which is, at least, something we can work on.

Anyway, as I was going to say before I went off ranting, ten counties voted for Alan Keyes, and they are in the southern fifth of the state, or what I like to refer to as "Northern Kentucky." And no, I haven't been to the Lincoln museum yet, but my cousin goes to UIS, so I am hoping to get a chance to visit her in Springfield soon and go to the new library.

in the SF Bay Area, of all places, but not very often. They are most likely to be seen heading East, near Livermore, Pleasanton, Walnut Creek. The diehards sporting these stickers ALL drive the biggest SUV's on the market. Many of them seem to be seniors with money. I frequently pick up on a "I got mine. Screw you!" attitude from these people. I always look to see who these people are, and I bet numerous others do, too. Maybe the defensive posturing is because they get so many dirty looks.

You see "W" stickers even here in Austin, Texas. Mind you, they tend to be more prevalent in West Austin and in more expensive areas like Westlake and Jester Estates. Most of the ones I've noticed are on more expensive vehicles or on some older retiree's machines. But you also see lots of "W" stickers on certain classes of pickups. For some reason or other, small building contractors seem to love Dear Leader and they still show their support for him.

That could just be because it's getting so far from the election but I am hopeful because at the same time I'm seeing less right-wing and Bush stickers, I'm starting to see a whole lot more liberal stickers everywhere, even here in our little red town. Last year at this time I saw W and right-wing stickers all over. Now I only see the yellow ribbons and flags. Rarely do I see a W. In fact, the last one I saw, I got up close and it actually was one of those WTF?! stickers! :headbang: Yesterday I saw a "Republicans for Voldemort" sticker and the day before, in our fundie town grocery store parking lot I saw a "Defend America--Defeat Bush" sticker. Then there was one on a huge pickup truck that said "If you're not of this world, then please go back." :rofl: (In case you don't understand this one, it's because the fundies around here all have these "Not Of This World" stickers on their cars.

Invariably, I see one or two a day (sometimes more), usually on a beat-up old Sunfire or S-10 (the latter accompanied by a "Sportsmen for Bush" sticker), but I still see plenty on the gigantic SUVs and minivans (the latter almost always paire with the Jesus fish).

I used to see a whole lot more when I drove south into Michigan's Oakland County to go to work. I'm glad that I go the opposite direction now. I see a lot fewer of them overall now.

I always wonder if they don't know that Shrub's approval rating is in the tank, if they're just willfully ignorant, or just plain stupid. Maybe it's a combination of all three.
