Just finished watching The Constant Gardner

like I needed to get more pissed off at big pharma companies...

If you haven't seen it I would highly recommend it. Within the context of a love story, it is a very realistic look at how the drug industry operates. Won't say anymore so as not to spoil it.

Makes me look forward to Michael Moore's next project, which I believe is an expose of big pharma. These scum are just as bad as the oil companies and arms manufacturers.

We started it a couple days ago and our Netflix disc zapped out in the middle, so when we got the replacement in the mail today we had to finish it. It was an excellent movie and unfortunately, all too believable.

could be or probably is happening with lots of drugs. They think they have their very own test field in countries with poverty and no protection from their government. :grr:

I was pissed for a week after watching that... great movie, excellent points, etc..etc... recommended for those that have not seen it.

This is a movie you really have to watch, and give yourself time to get into. If you're remotely tired, you'll zonk right out; unless you really really love lots of dialogue and movies that build slowly. It's good, it just takes a while.

22. Thanks For The Rec. (SPOILER ALERT)

It just finished. Very well done and rather than depressing me, it made me feel small. ...almost helpless. As strange as this sounds, I was glad that there wasn't a ramboesque, hero saves the day ending. I thought it was going to come to that when Quayle was presented with the pistol. It made the movie all the more real.

It is a very good film, but don't be talked into it if you really don't want to watch a film that will make you angry and/or upset, because it will. I waited until I was in the right frame of mind to watch it, myself, and I'm glad I did see it, but only then.

I guess on some levels, I'm not as emotionally flexible or open as I used to be. Well, I know that I'm not, not right now. I used to watch anything, any time, if it was good or just interesting. Now, I won't unless I'm in the frame of mind to watch it, or it seduces me into it unexpectedly.

Sad in some ways, yes, but not depressing because she was such a fighter and (without giving too much away) some things were accomplished. It speaks to the power that even one person can have if they are willing to fight and how important the fight itself is, even if it seems hopeless.

On the one hand. It was a heroine's story, too. I guess it just made me think about the reality of the premise, and even if only half as bad as it was portrayed, it infuriates me.

20. my boss just got back from working in Kenya for 2 years ...

He says that the filmmakers did not exaggerate the extent of the poverty. If anything, the slums outside Nairobi (shown in the film) are much WORSE than what is depicted -- no services, no medical care, etc. for >400,000 people.

21. The Kenya scenes were bad, but the Sudan scenes

were terrifying. Thre was one scene after a raid where a little girl, looked like maybe 5 or 6, was standing amidst the acrnage, holding a puppy on a leash, with no one else around. It was truly gut-wrenching.

It's in the same vein as The Constant Gardener, but it deals with illegal arms trading, blood diamonds, etc. I highly recommend it.

Did not get much exposure on DU as Fahrenheit 911 even though it is a better movie. It did not just touched on 9/11 but how the whole military industrial complex has shaped the U.S. as we know it.

And it uses non-liberal to expose it.
