Why an Iran invasion would be harder to sell than Iraq

Unlike Iraq, the dictator of Iran isn't a household name that all Americans know and hate and depict sodomizing Satan in adult cartoons. The fact that Saddam is almost as infamous in America as Hitler was IMHO a major reason why so many Americans supported the Iraq invasion. Of course, since when has public opinion ever mattered to Bush? According to him, 98% of the world is just a "focus group." Asshole.

We can forget about any invasion of Iran. We don't have the resources to do it (just ask our Generals), they've been chewed up in Iraq. Also, Iran has a real army. Not a match for even a weakened US army, but enough to put up a fight. Iran is much bigger than Iraq.

But more importantly, Iran has been keeping a lid on the Shiites in Iraq. They've been biding their time. If we start the 'ol saber rattling, you can bet that they will start shaking up southern Iraq. We can't afford that. They know that, we know they know that. And they know we know that they know that.

So what are we up to? Beats me. Sanctions won't work. The Chinese et al would be only to happy to move in. The UN probably can't do anything.
I really think there is no end game here. Remember, we are dealing with the most incompetent gang that has ever crept out of the Potomac.

7. I'd add that...

Iran is not only a lot larger, but has a fairly homogenous population that generally likes its government, so there will be no talk of sympathy from the people for toppling it.

This is the country that rose up to depose our boy, the Shah, not all that long ago, and has no use for a new US puppet government-- no roses in our path there.

We could, at great expense, bomb them back into the stone age, but no one with any sense could imagine what that would accomplish. It is doubtful that, after the Iraq debacle, anyone outside of the Inner Circle would think of supporting it.

Invade Iran rhetoric will ramp up between now and November. If repugs retain control of Congress - we'll invade in 2007.

2 other scenarios:

1. terror attack on US soil that will be blamed on Iran. Doesn't matter if there is a connection or not.

2. Israel bombs Iranian nuke plant. Iran retailiates. We have to go in to defend Israel

how easy will people fall into believing Iran did this? And it doesn't have to be Houston...anywhere in the SW is good since it will help with the immigration discussion they have started and everyone has fallen into.

And my God how Bush hammered the 'Saddam thing' before the invation of Iraq. I couldn't stand to get close to a TV with that lunatic on every night, swiping his fist in the air, with spit flying out of his mouth.

But look at what they're doing with Iran now. The Washington propaganda machine is in full swing. They're attacking Iran verbally. So it is very effective: first start criticising the opponent, then attack them.

But as someone else noted: Iran is strong militarily. They have 68 million people, and a well-trained and loyal military.
