Shakeup won't stop Bush's house of cards from falling
But the cosmetic shakeup at the White House really means little will change. It is widely known that a few influential insiders — namely Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and senior presidential adviser Karl Rove — have been calling the shots since before the U.S. Supreme Court's Dec. 12, 2000, ruling placed Mr. Bush in the White House.
Under the direction of this triumvirate, Mr. Bush has:
Ignored the counsel of the United Nations and our allies to wage war against a sovereign nation that posed no threat to our country, draining precious resources from the war on the real terrorists who attacked our country Sept. 11, 2001.
Approved budgets resulting in record deficits and a skyrocketing national debt.
Bungled the recovery effort for millions affected by Hurricane Katrina.
..................
Decimated the protections of the Fourth Amendment by authorizing eavesdropping on Americans without first obtaining a warrant or showing probable cause.
Stood behind Mr. Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, in spite of federal indictments on charges of obstructing justice, perjury and lying. Mr. Rove is still under investigation by a grand jury in the matter, which involves revealing classified information for political gain.
