1. Given the job of changing the pope's bedpan, no doubt.
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 03:11 PM by shain from kane
Oh, that's right. That pope died and went to heaven.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone. That's why I put that heaven part in there.

Well, they do give the immigrants the jobs that the local people won't do. Check out those Swiss guards.

2. How do you suppose he got there?
I'm guessing MILAIR, either to Sicily, Naples or Aviano....or maybe even the mil side at Fumicino.

3. the point is that the poor man had to move away from his native
land and his family because he rejected islam. i read last week that someone said "beheading him was too good -- he should be chopped up into little pieces".:dilemma:

6. He was also referred to as a "microbe" by one of the clerics.
Pleasant bit of rhetoric once employed by the Nazis against the Jews.

7. The poor man, in actual fact, was a bit of a bastard, per his family
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x786179

Didn't support them, was a general asshole. A deadbeat dad who abandoned his kids, then blows back into town and wants to be the Big Man on Campus.

Now, that's not a reason to execute him, but he's no saint. They're well rid of the shitheel.

10. I have no argument with that point, at all--it does make us all ask
the question, which has been asked before, a generation or more ago: Well, it's one, two, three, what are fighting for? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, next stop--Afghanistan!!!

Of course, we DO know what we are fighting for--we're fighting for OIL, natural gas, and strategic influence so that we can call the tune over that way and make them dance when we want them hopping. And the reason that we went to Afghanistan was to get Old Samma out of the way, so he couldn't use the Stan as a base to screw with us. Hey, so now, his boys have moved shop to the tribal hinterlands of Pakistan--that worked out real well for us, I guess...not!

But it is rather brutally ironic, that the right wing poster boy for Afghan Xtianity beat both his daddy and his daughters and failed to provide for his family.

I think he might want to bone up on the teachings of the Jesus he claims to follow...!!!!!

15. Of course, his family isn't going to say what a sweet guy he
was. They're going to reinforce the party line that apostasy is a form of anti-social behavior in a good, Muslim society.

OK, he might be a creep, his family basically turned him into the authorities, which one supposes they wouldn't do if they care for him. But my point is, there isn't any freedom of speech here, if people can be executed for arbitrary reasons like becoming Christian.

Or maybe it's the family that's creepy. Maybe they thought, "Let's get rid of that good-for-nothing Ahmad, why don't we rat him out for his apostasy? He'll get executed, hey, too bad."

16. According to the article, they didn't give a crap about his religion
at the outset. They cared about him beating up grampa and his two daughters. And they were none too happy that he took off for eight years and didn't send home a dime of support money. I do think they might have used the law to their advantage to stop being beaten on. The police chief points out that HE is married to a Russkie Xtian...and initially didn't give a damn about it either. Which makes me wonder, maybe the guy is a screaming pain in the ass, and they are using the law just to get rid of him. Life is a chance, and not all that sacred out that way.

I think this guy is starting to look a little nutso, myself. Good "Christians" generally don't beat up their old daddies or daughters.

Time will tell. I hope the media does a followup after he settles in.

18. You're probably right.
But he could be really creepy -- I mean as creepy as Dick Cheney -- and it would still not change the fact that the Afghan judiciary was prepared to sentence him to death for becoming Christian.

19. Sure, point taken.
However, if he were a 'good Christian' son and daddy, I somehow think this whole issue might not have ever been raised. All politics is local, after all. And this is a culture that, not all that long ago, used to play polo with HUMAN heads!!!

But that brings up the larger question--why are we really there? Not to bring 'democracy'--that's the fucking COVER STORY!!! We're there for strategic influence, and maybe some natural gas down the line, and of course, to box in Eye-Ran....

17. Well, this kinda screws up the Mormon adventures in Afghanistan I'll wager
To say nothing of all of the other church outreach programs that are put forward with an eye toward gaining converts, willing or not.

14. so does my husband. he's been with his company 36 years, but
he's always too busy to take it and has to forfeit it.

but i've heard that in most of europe people work less hours and have more leisure time. i even read the other day that in france they pay for you to go to a spa once a year. they know the importance of rest and relaxation. no wonder they can smoke and drink wine and stay healthy. :sarcasm:

13. I read that Afghanistan has $Billions of Natural Gas...
under their soil but it will take $Millions to gain access to it and build pipelines to utilize this natural resource. Irony: One of the poorest countries in the world.
