Pro-lifers don't like pro-life Britney statue
Seriously, is no one ever happy? It seems like a man can't sculpt an image of Britney Spears on a bearskin rug squeezing out her first born son without everyone getting all worked up about it, even those you thought were on your side.

You see, artist Daniel Edwards created "Monument To Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston" as an homage to the young mother, citing her bravery in choosing to put her baby ahead of her career. The problem is, Edwards' fellow pro-lifers don't like the sculpture very much, given Britney's rather provocative pose, which is, I'm assuming, not the most comfortable position for giving birth, unless you happen to be a pack mule.

But it's not just pro-life groups who are taking umbrage to Edwards' masterpiece; the animal rights group PETA isn't happy with the bearskin rug Brit is birthing upon, either. Okay, so his little art project didn't quite make the statement he intended, big deal. If nothing else, he should be honored that he actually got two groups who probably tend to lean opposite directions politically to agree on at least one thing. That's a grand achievement in itself.

18. actually, the sculpture, technically, was very well done
the subject matter is another issue, but the sculptor has talent.

additionally, I suspect the scupltor was being tongue in cheek.

15. This is exactly what that piece was designed to do.
I am convinced that the whole thing is calculated and that the sculpture is ironic. Anyone who reads the tabloid press about Spears knows two things:

* She had an elective C-section because she didn't want to go through labor.
* She has distinguished herself as a mother by driving with the kid on her lap, conveniently positioned for flying through the windshield in case she stops short.

That sculpture is of something that never happened. It represents a fantasy, and I don't think it's the artist's fantasy either. It's meant to represent the pro-life vision of the female body: a groveling, submissive, violable, eternally pregnant fetish object. The fact that combining the porno pose with the emerging baby's head freaks people the hell out is precisely the point.

By calling it a "Pro-Life Monument" and issuing a deadpan press release, the artist is forcing the pro-life PR machine to either embrace this horrible thing and look like people who need serious professional help, or reject it and look like hypocrites. ("What, you don't think birth is beautiful?")

Mark my words,

The Plaid Adder

"Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston," believed Pro-Life's first monument to the 'act of giving birth,' is purportedly an idealized depiction of Britney in delivery. Natural aspects of Spears' pregnancy, like lactiferous breasts and protruding naval, compliment a posterior view that depicts widened hips for birthing and reveals the crowning of baby Sean's head...

"A superstar at Britney's young age having a child is rare in today's celebrity culture. This dedication honors Britney for the rarity of her choice and bravery of her decision," said gallery co-director, Lincoln Capla...

"Britney provides inspiration for those struggling with the 'right choice'," said artist Daniel Edwards, recipient of a 2005 Bartlebooth award from London's The Art Newspaper. "She was number one with Google last year, with good reason--people are inspired by the beauty of a pregnant woman..."

How could the pro-lifers POSSIBLY have a problem with this? They should be delighted by the publicity!

DISCLAIMER: Having one's hips in the air while the baby is crowning doesn't strike me as being either comfortable for the mother or safe for the baby. But never having given birth myself, I feel I should most humbly defer to those who have some actual experience in this matter rather than offer a totally unqualified opinion.

There will be demostrations in the streets, maybe even a riot because of this sculpture.

This is the power that great art has.

Every so often a sculpture comes along that rocks not only the art world but society itself and how we relate one another as human beings...or for some as something less than human...

Edwards sculpure nails America with this sculpture. He nails us right to a cross of our own hypocrisy.

Pornography
Pop Culture
Pro-Life
Culture of Life
Choice
Consumerism
Capitalism
Mass Media Culture

Are all wrapped in this work....it is vulgar, lyrical, hilarious and beautiful in one amazing motion. It is a perfect icon for our times. Just as Warhol's Marilyns were for the sixties.

I can predict the opening of this showing in New York will be a huge event. Cops, protest groups will all be in the streets battling each other because of this sculpture.

This nation is ready to blow its fucking top and sometimes the catylst can come from such unlikely places.

I posted a little blurb about this sculpture on my blog last thursday. I have been getting a continuous stream of hits to the site as people from all over America and the world are trying get thier heads around this work of art. I've already claimed it is as important as Degas - The Little Dancer first displayed in 1881. Or Duchamp's - Fountain. Both scupture stretched the notion of what art is and what does it say to the viewer.

I'm mean I used to get maybe 10 hits a day...now it is getting pounded. That alone tells me that there is a firestorm gathering around this piece that will explode across this nation...

I love art. I love art that pisses people off and makes them laugh. I love artists. Without them how would we ever really learn anything about ourselves? We have become so extreme and self-abosrbed as a nation that we have let jackasses lead this nation to war and corporations drug us and pacify us with comfort and the warm distraction of television...and the tittilation of our pop stars.

One this is for sure...love or loathe this sculpture it will not be going away ever....art history has been made.

Dig it.
