Bush Blames Saddam for Iraq Instability

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Wednesday that Saddam Hussein, not continued U.S. involvement in Iraq, is responsible for ongoing sectarian violence that is threatening the formation of a democratic government.

In his third speech this month to bolster public support for the war, Bush worked to counter critics who say the U.S. presence in the wartorn nation is fueling the insurgency. Bush said that Saddam was a tyrant and used violence to exacerbate sectarian divisions to keep himself in power, and that as a result, deep tensions persist to this day.

"The president can give all the speeches he wants, but nothing will change the fact that his Iraq policy is wrong," said Reid, D-Nev. "Two weeks ago, he told the American people that Iraqis would control their country by the end of the year. But last week, he told us our troops would be there until at least 2009."

Saddam kept everyone in check often by uniting them against one another. He was rutheless in that way. However, the US by invading and getting rid of Saddam suddenly caused great tension, like a dam ready to burst. That is why invading Iraq, despite Saddam's treachery, was a bad idea overall.

US troops being there did little to soften the hate and brought more hatred and desperation to the country than ever before.

Saddam is in the past. Iraqis are growing frustrated with the Americans always going on about Saddam, Saddam and Saddam, etc. He's not even an issue any more. He's gone and now there's a major mess to clean up. Saddam being bad is the only argument pro-Bush's have in this war, as it is the only one I can think of that makes any sense. Of course, given all the cons to this war, that pro seems small overall.

Saddam is in a jail cell. He has no contact with the outside world. He's guarded 24 hours a day by big guys with big guns. He can't take a pee without someone doing a cavity search. And yet he is more powerful, more influential than a free man with the world's largest military at his disposal. And Bush is willing to say this out loud. In public. Without blushing.

19. First, we read about Saddam telling Iraqi to keep on fighting the

occupation, then we hear him threaten someone who betrayed him, now *ss tells us it is Saddam's fault that it is so violent over there again. This seems rather odd to me. Why is it that suddenly Saddam is making public statements to the media just when *ss needs a talking point to explain the escalating mess in Iraq?
