Brazil: Gasoline Free. Anyone see this story on CBS?

By the end of this year, Brazil will have switched completely from gasoline derived from oil, to sugar cane based ethynol. According to the report, it's cheaper and less polluting. Pretty extraordinary.

more than 50% of the country was using alcohol veihicles. It was a success. Them big oil came in and "switched" them back to oil.

It is very interesting.

I wonder how long the farm land can hold up to growing the same crop over and over. Will fertilizer be necessary? Will crop rotation work to replenish the farmed land. Of course the same holds true for ethanol from corn in the USA.

Is it another form of the perpetual motion machine?

8. Crops have to be rotated...

You can't keep growing the same crop on the same land over and over. That being said there are MILLIONS of acres that we PAY for farmers to never grow and freakin thing. Put that land instead of paying millions for its non-use.

A few weeks ago, there was an episode where the racers had to use the sugar cane to make gasoline, then fill their VW Bug with the fluid and drive to the pit stop.

No, it's shameful! We should have been there long ago. It won't be so "fascinating" when all of this country's SUVs are beached on the side of the road and Brazil is just perking along as usual.
