You remember Tulia, Texas. How could you forget? That was where almost half the African American men in town were falsely arrested in a bogus drug "sting" operation with obvious racial overtones.
Plus ca change... Now a 7-year-old boy has been suspended from school in Tulia -- for wearing a Mohawk?!
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2006/03/29/national/a170546S26.DTLAll 7-year-old Dallas Saenz wants to do is express his personality, but school officials in this Panhandle town have countered that the first-grader's Mohawk hairdo is disruptive.
Highland Elementary officials sent Dallas home March 10, the day before spring break, because of the spiky cut. When classes resumed March 20, Dallas had tamed the Mohawk by combing it down....
Dallas' parents said they've gotten two citations, each with a $300 fine, for "disrupting classes." Their son could face truancy charges, and he could be held back a grade if he misses more than 21 days, they said. What is this, the town in "Footloose"?! And what a surprise to discover the kid bears a Mexican surname. I guess planting coke on a seven-year-old would've been a little obvious... :eyes:
Note: the article makes no mention of Tulia's previous turn in the national spotlight. Hmmm...
