Kaloogian "blasts liberal journalists" for using pic to attack campaign

http://www.kfmb.com/stories/story.44734.html

<snip>

Kaloogian, a former state assemblyman, removed the photo from his Web site on Wednesday. In an e-mail to supporters, he blasted bloggers and journalists for using the photograph to attack his campaign for the 50th Congressional District.

"The liberal journalists who dominate the ranks of the media want American troops to pull out of Iraq before the mission there is completed," he wrote.

46. Thats like the McGovern Quote (I think)
"If they stop telling lies about us, we will stop telling the truth about them."

And then the wana-be congresscritter wants to shoot the messanger. Typical Republican. A democrat would simply appologise for the mistake and point out that even if the picture is from the wrong country, its immaterial for the point being made and the underlying argument matters.

Howard Kaloogian, a conservative Republican seeking the north San Diego County seat previously held by disgraced former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, has often accused the news media of painting an unfairly negative picture of the war in Iraq.

Now Kaloogian finds himself accused of slanting the news to fit his own beliefs.

Kaloogian's conundrum stems from a picture posted on his Web site that purported to show a peaceful city block in Baghdad.

"We took this photo of Baghdad while we were in Iraq," the accompanying caption read. "Iraq (including Baghdad) is much more calm and stable than what many people believe it to be."

37. Actually, TMBG did not write the song. As to who did...?
TMBG FAQ says the Four Lads popularized it in the 50s, but it may go back further, to a German jazz singer.

In any case, great song. I loved the album when it came out, and my 5-year old now listens to it every night at bedtime!

Great parody, BTW!

However, like on his old site depicting this picture was taken in Iraq, it's not. And, even without further caption, on the site you just gave the link, people might think this was taken in Iraq, which, again, was not:

We simply think that he, Bush and their ilk are going to end up getting a lot more Americans (and Iraqis, and who knows who else) KILLED with their misguided war. And he's defending this misguided war (And doing a bang-up job of it, i must say! GREAT picture!).

thread title (3-30-06 GD): DU'S NETECTIVES HOCK A KALOOGIE ALL THE WAY TO THE NY TIMES!
Excerpt: “The sleuths of cyberspace never sleep. Starting Tuesday afternoon and working through the night, a group of bloggers dissected a photo and a caption on the Web site of a Republican Congressional candidate in California, Howard Kaloogian, and declared it a fraud. Within hours, Mr. Kaloogian withdrew the picture, blamed an unnamed staff member for the blunder and apologized. The whole kerfuffle would be of no moment, except that Mr. Kaloogian posted the photo to illustrate a peaceful and prosperous Baghdad that he claims the antiwar liberals who run the so-called mainstream news media never show. Mr. Kaloogian, a former state assemblyman, is one of 18 candidates running for the San Diego Congressional seat vacated when Representative Randy Cunningham, a Republican, resigned and later went off to prison after being convicted of taking $2.4 million in bribes. The color photograph shows a bustling street corner with a variety of shops, billboards and fashionably dressed pedestrians. The caption reads, ‘Iraq (including Baghdad) is much more calm and stable than what many people believe it to be. But each day, the news media finds any violence occurring in the country and screams and shouts about it — in part because many journalists are opposed to the U.S. effort to fight terrorism.’ It turns out that the photo was taken in a suburb of Istanbul last summer by a member of a group Mr. Kaloogian led to the Middle East in support of President Bush. Mr. Kaloogian said photos taken by the party had been mixed up.”

48. The NYT coverage of it called it an "error" and the reaction to it
a "kerfluffle." And the internet people who demonstrated the blatant lie used what was termed "relentless pursuit." Looks to me like the NYT is trying to minimize this and make the internet community - the ones who dared to expose the lie - look like the bad actor in this sordid little drama.

(NYT link and others in thread list I posted just above)
