Having read and heard reports about Jill Carroll's work in Iraq, I know that she wanted to IMMERSE herself in the culture of Iraq. She also spoke Arabic fluently and was a friend to many local Iraqis. Why would her garb be so strange to her detractors? She wore the traditional garb even before her kidnapping.

About a year before the current Iraq war began, my mother applied for work with the defense department in the Middle East. They could have sent her to Iraq or Saudi Arabia, it was her choice. She was advised though, that when she left the US gov't compound, she would have to wear a burka and keep her body covered from wrist to ankle. They said that was necessary for western women there.

After perusing some of the RW sites this afternoon (don't fuss, I like to see what they are saying), these are the main comments:

1. The timing: Complaints that the MSM is overlooking the fact that two of the "peaceniks" were rescued only a few weeks ago. Could it be that Jill's captors became frightened after that rescue, and so let her go? So credit must be given to the coalition army.

2. Ransom: Many are saying that since she was released, not rescued, that means a large ransom was probably paid. Seems that many insurgent groups finance their insurgency (they say terrorist/terrorism) by attaining ransoms from kidnapings. HOW MANY AMERICAN SOLDIERS WILL DIE due to the ransom money paid for Jill? (Barf)

3. She was treated well: "Her interpreter, killed during the kidnapping, was not available for comment."

4. And, of course, she planned it or was in on it....yada, yada, yada.

Reminds me of the Salem Witch Trials in the early days of Amurka....if the church accused you of being a witch, you could choose the trial-by-water....they tied your hands and feet and threw you into the lake. If you lived, that proved you were a witch...if you sank and drowned, then you were vindicated!

by the people she worked with and the iraqi people she meant in everyday life. she wore what she did out of respect for the people and their culture. who ever kidnapped her must have realized they had more to lose than to gain by killing her or someone told them to release her. i`m sure we will never know the truth and neither will she nor the people she works with.
