The illegal immigration issue has already been selected. Its divisive, racially charged and plays to the worst xenophobic nationalist impulses of the 'Reagan Democrats' so its perfect fodder for the GOP. Actually, its a desperate gamble since it could kill GOP prospects with Latinos as strongly as Nixon's southern strategy did with African-Americans. They can distance themselves from the WH, run a race baiting fear campaign against their 'liberal' soft-on-illegals Democratic congressional opponents and hold on to a few districts in the west where they were vulnerable. Western conservatives tend to be more libertarian than christian evangelical (with the mormon exceptions) and the whole faith-based government thing was never working for the GOP out there. But demonizing those Mexicans! That's the ticket in CA, AZ, NM, West Texas, OR, WA, CO etc...

Forget looking for then next fundie social issue like gay marriage, flag burning, abortion, they're running out of those issues, so its back to that old GOP standby, race.
