'Brokeback' banned in Bahamas at the request of Christian Council

NASSAU, Bahamas -- A Bahamian government board's decision to ban the movie "Brokeback Mountain" has prompted charges of discrimination and censorship in the island chain.

Gay rights groups and others have called on the Plays and Films Control Board to reverse its decision prohibiting theaters from showing the award-winning movie about a troubled love affair between two cowboys.

"You have a group of people who are telling grown men and women what they can and cannot watch," said Philip Burrows, a theater director in the island chain. "I cannot understand denying people the right to make their own choices."

Theaters in Nassau, the capital, had already begun to advertise the movie Friday when the board announced its ban at the request of the Bahamas Christian Council.

I guess excessive violence is fine with the Christian groups? They don't ban those movies.

5. Good point. The fundies who protest LGBTQ films and plays never

stop to examine the violence in other films.

Or in their own faith, either, for that matter. The sad paradox of Christianity is that in order to have redemptive blood, nails must be driven into the flesh of a Savior. And their much-beloved (St.) Paul spent the majority of his adult life persecuting Christians, only to be quoted heavily by the same fundies who oppose gay themes in film.

I'd love to see an ecumenical council of evolved Christians take these fundie censors and renounce them as non-Christians. A very sharp separation of claims is in order.

6. The Bahamas and the Caribbean Islands are generally very conservative.

I dated a man from Grenada and was surprised at how conservative the culture is. Homosexuality is not very acceptable in many island cultures. My friend (living in the US at the time) was not anti-gay at all and in fact worked to help organize a local 5K race to benefit aids victims!


edit: I'm not saying what the government did was right, rather, I was just offering an explanation based on my knowledge of the culture and religion.

7. Well, they should get ready to ban more of them

I think you are going to see more movies featuring homosexual relationships. Not because of any liberal or gay "agenda," but because it provides movie makers a new avenue to run with. Brokeback Mountain showed them that if you make a great movie enough people will come see it. I really can't think of a straight love story scenario that hasn't been put on film.

If they don't want to see it, don't pay to watch.
