By Cindy Sheehan

As far as we can piece things together, March 31st, two years ago is the day that the First Cavalry arrived in Sadr City, a slum in Baghdad, formerly named "Saddam City," Iraq. I say "as far as we can piece together" because we have heard many different stories, but this date seems to be the one that we have heard most often.

Casey began a letter to us, his family, on April 1, 2004, telling us that he finally had an address where we could send letters and packages, and most of all, calling cards. The one and only time he called home from Kuwait, it had cost him 400 minutes just to connect the call and he didn't have much time to talk. That was the last we heard from him. He called about 12:30 one morning and said it was "hot" he was on his way to mass, and they should be convoying to Iraq at the end of that week. In his letter he mentioned that he had talked to me that morning, but I probably wouldn't remember it, because he had awakened me. Little did he know, I will never forget that call and I pray fervently that I never forget the sound of his voice.

4. 400 MINUTES???
Excuse me for zooming in on what seems like a trivial matter, but our soldiers have to pay for international calls to call home? wtf? I'm boggled by that. I had the vague idea that this sort of thing was free or provided for somehow, though I have no clue where I got that from. I suppose this should be no shock to me since they're FORBIDDING them to buy their own armor, because, yanno, they could get HURT in non-military issue armor, and of course NO ARMOR must be better....In fact, maybe now that they're not allowed to waste money on SAFETY EQUIPMENT they can afford those gigantic phone bills a little easier!

I'm rambling but I'm really just flabbergasted. Bush sent them there like Fagin sending out pickpockets, is the image I cannot get out of my head--sent them in rags, half-starving, essentially, to loot and steal and make him and his richer.

I'm applying for furnace duty in the part of Hell that must be reserved for this level of disgusting evilness.......

7. Phone cards are something always welcomed by soldiers...
Yeah, it's not paid for. Family pays or citizens who donate phone cards, or they pay themselves. Sucks, I agree.

6. April 4th, 2004 was the day my husband came home from Iraq
alive.

And on that day, every year since his return, I remember and I am thankful....and then I say, but Casey didn't.

One day in a life.

My husband came home to me.
Casey Sheehan will never come home to his mother again.
