Just so you know how the Freepers treated Helen Thomas

I monitored freerepublic.com every day for years. They despise Helen Thomas, and have made her an object of derision. I recall incidents where they would call her favorite dinner restaurant and ask to speak to her on the phone repeatedly. I recall them telling of various ways they poured their hatred out on her. There were many ethnic slurs (Helen is of Lebanese background, I believe) and slurs about alcohol.

DU has definitely modeled respect for the truth and respect for those who tell it, by honoring Helen Thomas.

I had dinner with Helen Thomas a few times at Mama Aeysha's Restaurant up near the National Zoo in DC.
A few observations.

#1. She is a mean drunk. Most nights, she gets that way very quickly on a cheap red wine she loves.

#2. She is Middle Eastern. Her parents here immigrants from Lebanon.

#3. She is virulently antisemitic, especially anti-Israel.

#4. She hates, absolutely hates the entire Bush family, from Barbara on down.

#5. Her nose is so big it looks like the arresting hook on an F-14 Tomcat.

18. Helen Thomas accompanied Nixon with the White House

press corps when he visited China for the first time. I just saw a documentary about Mao on the history channel. She's a reporter not a liberal. She isn't supposed to let her political bias interfere with her journalism. Can't they get this through their thick skulls? If their tin god does ungodlike things, it's her job to investigate and report on it.

20. Freepers are anti-American, so naturally they would hate someone who

upholds the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution.

However, they are losing support ~ I clicked the link from DU last night over to FR to watch them spew more hatred for Helen, jealous of the wonderful support she got and all the love that was apparent from so many people. The thread was very short, compared to what it would have been three years ago.

Helen should regard those tactics as proof of her courage and she ought to save every nasty, vile message she receives. One day soon, we will need evidence that these people existed and a book about them, using their own vicious cowardly words will probably be published. Future generations will need to see how the scum rose to the top under this regime, as a warning that we need to be ever-vigilent in protecting this democracy. Helen will be considered one of the heroes of this period, while those little cockroaches will be merely a footnote.

They will crawl back into the holes they were hiding in after this country is taken back from the coup e'etaters currently in control, and it might be difficult to find them. So saving their diatribe as Exhibit A of what happened to this country, and who supported it, might be a good thing to do for historical purposes before it is erased as they have a habit of doing whenever they are caught.
