WASHINGTON - Oil prices appear headed back toward $70 a barrel, a level not seen since Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast and sporadic shortages sent gasoline at the pump above $3 a gallon nationwide.

While last summer's price spike triggered outrage in Congress and hurt sport utility vehicle sales, it caused only a hiccup in motor-fuel consumption. And for now, with demand back on the rise, the economy seems capable of absorbing uncomfortably high prices.

Analysts warn, however, that consumers and businesses could be just one major supply disruption away from more serious financial consequences.

Sherry Cooper, chief economist at BMO Nesbitt Burns, said the ramifications of $70 oil and $3-a-gallon gasoline would be "more mild" the second time around "because we're getting kind of used to it."

remember the last time gas was under 1.50? I do, about three years ago. Sigh...

They were around $1.20-1.30 a gallon. At the time (1999), Dick Cheney commented that high gasoline prices were a sign of a failed presidency.

I guess he knew his administration was going to be a complete failure.

the ballpark they'll stay in.

The question is what we're prepared to do about them. If we insist on living in exurbs more than an hour's commute away from our jobs and doing that commute in oversidzed gas hogs, it's going to hurt a lot.

If we're more sensible about living smaller in every way, it won't hurt us much.

6. I don't think the economy can "absorb" higher fuel prices...

because goods prices will also have to go up, too. That's inflation -- and to slow it they'll want to increase interest rates, further pushing down the housing market, etc.

8. Not only am I getting used to it....

I want the price to go up to 7.00 a gallon. That will make Americans push their politicians harder to push for alternative fuels. We need that in the longrun.

while people were glad to see prices drop to $2.30ish/gal - they were still bitching about it

$2.55 as of this morning in my neck of the woods, and a couple of guys came up to me at work and asked that I start posting the gas tracker results in the breakroom next week

... then dropped them to give us a false sense of 'bonus', and now they're slowly inching back up to the threshhold, gradually enough so that folks notice but don't panic.

I just went to Butler auto action here in pa weds and all you saw was SUVS.They were going for kelly blue book trade in value.The smaller cars were still going cheap.I havent noticed a drop here in western Pa in the gas hogs as of yet.

16. Now that my commute is 65 miles each, I am certainly not getting used

to it. But then again, unless I'm driving in a 'spirited' fashion, I can squeeze more than 30 miles out of each gallon.

17. It's funny you should mention this because I had to take a cab...........

....from one place to another today and of course got to talking about the overnight rise in gas prices. The cab driver said, "I saw $2,74 a gallon" and went looking some where else." My reply was, "Might as well get used to it because I think gas will hit $3.00 a gallon before the summer travel season really gets started. In a year we could be looking at $5 a gallon too, which will make Bush and Cheney very happy."

At that point, the cab driver went into this tirade about how he had voted for Bush the first time but not the second time. The cab driver went on and on - until we got to my destination - about how terrible Bush was. I inserted a comment about Cheney and Rumsfeld being Bush's handler and that Bush 41 was so mad at his son that they don't even visit anymore. The cab driver then said, "I'll bet the old man is occasionally tempted to kill his own son." All I could do is laugh and yes I gave him a little extra tip too!!!! :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:
