LEE COUNTY: There is outrage in London over a decision made by Lee County school officials. Superintendent Dr. James Browder told the Fort Myers High School Band they could not travel to London to participate in the New Year's Day Parade, citing security concerns. London parade officials say they have offered to fly school officials to London to see the security measures first-hand. Parade officials are not taking the rejection well.
The London New Year's Day Parade is watched by more than 200 million people worldwide. When considering the number of performers, organizers say the parade is twice as big as Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
"Let's have a meeting where I can address everybody's concerns. If at the end of that meeting they still think it's unsafe to go and the majority of people don't want to do it – fine," said Bob Bone, Executive Director of New Year's Day Parade.
Bob Bone has been in charge of London's New Year's Day Parade for the last 20 years. He offered to fly Lee County Superintendent Dr. James Browder and another school official, Herb Wiseman, to London to see the security in place.
So far they have both rejected his offer.
