I'm Canadian and I know it. I love being Canadian. Not perfect.
But when I grew up, I thought everyone's airline was "Air Canada".
I thought everyone had "Hockey Night in Canada". I thought fairness
was a right. Sorry, but I'm Canadian. :)

I know everyone has the feeling of relief when they travel for a bit,
then get back home...but when I travel outside of Canada, then get back
home, I really feel extra-relieved to be home. We were away with the kids
not too long ago, and as soon as we crossed the border and we were back
in Canada, the kids had even said they were glad to be back in Canada.
But it's probably the same for anyone, from any country.
Glad you're here..now get your Canadian Citizenship to vote against the
conservative party here, lol!

In any case, American's calling Canadian's American's is probably intended as a compliment in the speaker's small minds... of course, at the best of times it was misguided and anymore, during these worst of times, it's more of an insult. Remember though that for citizens of one country to feel as comfortable and accepting of those of another country probably is in some sense something of a well meaning statement (that is, if there isn't too much of an arrogance involved--such as that they're just the 51st state and don't even know it). So, the moral of the story? Forgive the small minds so long as they have a kindly orientation?

who had never met a Canadian IRL never mind travel to Canada that was SHOCKED that I could tell the difference between an American and a Canadian the second I crossed the border (cross border shopping, ran into other Canadians too). She thought there wasn't much of a difference.

to be from Canada. Really proud. We thank you for letting the slaves we had be free there, those who refused Viet Nam find shelter there, the planes on 9/11 land there. I'm a Canadian and I do know it. However I have wondered why you "Americans" took over and started calling yourselves that when there are a lot more people living in other countries in North and South America.

By rights, you should go by "United Statesians".

It always baffles me when people fail to acknowledge that the country's full name is United States of AMERICA. Sorry, but that's what we chose. Don't know why it irritates people from other countries that we shorten it to something that isn't a ridiculous mouthful. What's the big deal? :shrug:

7. I noticed on my recent trip to Europe...

that many Canadians were wearing clothing with maple leafs and other logos indicating Canada. I don't blame them - I'd want to distinguish myself from the country immediately to the south. I joked with Europeans I met that I'm from Michigan, so I'm almost Canadian!

10. Well, if it makes you feel any better, I backpacked through Europe

in the 70's and believe it or not, Americans still wanted Canadian pins
from me to wear then. I did meet some fantastic americans though, and one of
them was from Michigan too :)

Americans probably would be well advised to diguise themselves when traveling abroad; most especially since we've necessarily become associated with the current Catastrophe in Chief--and all the hatred (and shame) down upon us. Then, of course, if American travelers of the Republican sort did seek to disguise themselves by pretending to be Canadians it wouldn't be long before the rest of the world would accuse Canadians of being 'Ugly Canadians' (lumping them in with Ugly Americans)(of course, Candians are Americans; just not United States of Americans)(by that measure, I suppose Mexicans are too)(Ahh, the joys of continental identities).

My son and his wife honeymooned in Italy. I told them to look Canadian. Luckily they look "European", people often stopped them to ask for directions through their journey in Italy.

Honestly I didn't want them to come back to the US. I love them and would miss them but...our country makes me sick right now.
