Democrats' impeachment agenda

Mar 31, 2006
by Jeff Kuhner ( bio | archive )

President Bush beware: Democrats are gearing up for an impeachment campaign. This may seem ridiculous. But if the Democrats capture control of Congress in the November elections, then this nightmarish scenario is very likely to become a reality.

Sen. Russell Feingold, Wisconsin Democrat, is proposing that Mr. Bush be “censured” for approving wiretaps on al Qaeda terrorist suspects without a court warrant. Leading congressional Democrats are distancing themselves from the idea. But liberal bloggers and grassroots activists are strongly supporting Mr. Feingold’s initiative. His bold attacks are resonating with Democrats, especially with the Howard Dean-MoveOn.org-Michael Moore voters that increasingly make up the core of the party.

In fact, should they retake the House or Senate (or both) censure will serve to pave the way for formal impeachment proceedings.

The logic of the Democrats’ rhetoric and their intense—almost pathological—hatred of Mr. Bush ensure that this will happen. The arguments of Mr. Feingold, Al Gore, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California all boil down to the same point: Mr. Bush broke the law. They assert that the president illegally authorized the National Security Agency to engage in domestic electronic surveillance without a warrant from a secret court, thereby violating the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

4. I am Hoping in the end...all this will play out for the Good.,
The Pubs are saying Bush has the authority...which is BS...there is no checks and balance ...

If we let him go...it means he can come into anyones home on the pretext of Terrorism and protecting America from harm...He is allowed to do this? This will mean he has the ultimate power of a dictator...something is terribly wrong with this picture...

6. They set great traps,
Or perhaps we do. If Democrats say yes, the election is about impeaching Bush, we will likely lose just enough of the skiddish center to turn the election. If Democrats say no, we risk losing the left. No matter what the Democratic leadership says, it'll hurt. Feingold better get his butt out there and turn his censure into votes, because he's the one who gave this entire right wing tactic credibility.

"The Impeachment Agenda"
by georgia10

It's an odd scenario, isn't it, when the Republicans are talking more about impeachment than Democrats. The GOP released a web ad today warning Americans that a Democratic Congress would vote to censure and impeach the President during a time of war.  Yes, folks, this is their brilliant GOTV strategy. Vote Republican, or Bush gets the boot.

This outcome of the midterm election, of course, will come down to turnout.  Democrats have a 10-15% lead in generic congressional ballots but all that is meaningless when Republicans in church buses show up to the polls in droves.  As an internal GOP memo reveals, Republicans are very concerned about turnout. The memo advises GOP Chair Ken Mehlman that turnout could parallel that of the election in 1982 or 1984, where Republicans showed up in normal numbers, but the polls were flooded by Democrats "because they were angry."

It goes without question that President Bush and this Congress have given us a lot to be angry about, with the energy of a  "throw the bums out!" strategy building in our party.  Democrats have a lot of work ahead of them in GOTV efforts, but they do have that palpable desire to "throw the bums out!" working in their favor.

And herein lies the GOP's problem. Their chosen method to galvanize their base is to keep the bums in. One bum, specifically, the Bum-in-Chief Bush. In its video (which is set to the music of bombs bursting, because you can never have enough fear-mongering in a Republian ad), the GOP warns that a Democratic Congress will impeach the President during a time of war. The implication being that you should vote for Republicans to save Bush's job.
