Poll question: If you suspected your neighbors were undocumented workers would you...
...turn them over to the authorities?

1. If they are undocumented workers, then it is their
employer who ought to be turned over to the "authorities." After all they can't be workers if they are not hired by an unscrupulous employer.

2. What? Make business accountable for this so-called "crisis"?
Hold their feet to the fire when they're breaking the law, instead of the people they knowingly hire illegally?

You've got some nerve!

4. Would you question them about where they worked...
...so you could turn their employer over to the authorities?

3. If your neighbors were Jews, would you turn them in to the Gestapo?

7. Was just thinking the same thought.
Or 2 men living together... or 2 women living together. The Gestapo also dragged gays and liberals away. And of course anyone who dissented against Dear Leader.

5. No I would not...
I live in California. The kids from my local high school were marching around the neighborhood protesting the Bush immigration atrocity proposal.

To them it meant the possible separation from family members, having family members afraid to seek medical aid or work. It it horrible and cruel.

My neighbors, all of them, are people I share an area with and a lifestyle with and in many cases they are friends. I don't care about their immigration status. They are Californians now, just like I am. They work, they pay taxes and they want to live here. They don't promote hate or intolerance.

I was actually thrilled to see the local kids that passionate about something. They marched against the war in Iraq too. Since a lot of our Central American population is here due to American interference in their chosen form of government and out of fear for their lives, I think the comparison of turning them over to the Gestapo is an apt comparison. Look at who is in charge of this government and how much they love crushing people's heads under their boots.

9. What for?
Turn them into who exactly? I mean everyone knows who the illegals are already. The cops know, the judges know, their employers know, the schools know, the hospitals know, social services knows. It's all a game where we pretend not to know they are are illegal. Like we pretend not to know which employers only hire illegals and pay them under the table. Like we pretend not to know the billions corporations make off of them. Come on, it's not even a realistic question.

11. What's the point of this thread? So everyone can pile on and say No?
Edited on Sat Apr-01-06 09:56 AM by cryingshame
how does that move the discussion forward?

Almost every single DU'er has agreed it's the Corporate employers who should be held liable.

Edit- it seems for every really thoughtful and constructive post on the topic of undocumented workers there's at least 5 more that serve no real purpose other then to extract emotion from fellow posters.

And that drummed up emotion retards our ability to have intelligent discussions.

19. 15%
I concede this is NOT a scientific survey. But if the fact that 15% of the people who voted would drop a dime on you if they suspected that you might be an undocumented worker doesn't bother you thats all right with me.

See ya later.

15. Who said anything about moving the discussion forward?
Rational discussion is for geeks. This is a chance for us to preen and posture and congratulate ourselves on how wonderfully brave and noble we are!

And for the record, I voted no. I blame the employers, not the people trying to make a living.

18. Living in So. AZ between Tucson and the border...
I see them occasionally. I would never think of calling the 'authorities' to turn them in.

I have never seen any on my property but my mother's neighbor woke up one morning to find 3 people sleeping on the patio furniture. Did she turn then in? No, just told them to 'vamanose' (sp?). And they left. We see helicopters several times every day on the lookout for migrants. For some reason, I usually give out small vibes that they won't 'catch' anyone when I see them flying around.
