1. They're figuring out they have been duped...
by the corporate whore wing of the party.

Hopefully the silly bastards will stay home, and out of my party!

2. The Rethugs must be conflicted about immigration and
are "divided" or at least pissed off. But they aren't sure who to cast aspersions toward just yet. Bush is a handy target but he's so clueless that blaming him is a pointless effort.

They can't blame the border guards who are likely out-manned and underfunded, at least by some counts, and besides which, at least Texas and California have GOP governors up for re-election.

You pose a real good question because the GOP faces a real big problem. They want fiscal conservatism and aren't getting it by a long shot, and they want a privileged class-based income but can't afford to dump illegal workers who in some case (not all) are picking the fruit, etc. It's a bind they're in and there's no easy escape.

3. No, they still don't get it
They think the democrats are just as bad (and maybe they are on this issue) or even worse that the repubs are caving into the democrats and the liberal media. I'd have to say they might be more likely to stay home is all. If some democrats can get out in front on stopping illegal immigration, we might pull some of them to our side.
