The Screwing of Cynthia McKinney

.....

According to those quoted on National Public Radio, McKinney’s “a loose cannon” (media expert) who “the people of Atlanta are embarrassed and disgusted” (politician) by, and she is also “loony” and “dangerous” (senator from her own party).

Yow! And why is McKinney dangerous/loony/disgusting? According to NPR, “McKinney implied that the Administration knew in advance about September 11 and deliberately held back the information.”

The New York Times’ Lynette Clemetson revealed her comments went even further over the edge: “Ms. McKinney suggest that President Bush might have known about the September 11 attacks but did nothing so his supporters could make money in a war.”

That’s loony, all right. As an editor of the highly respected Atlanta Journal Constitution told NPR, McKinney’s “practically accused the President of murder!”

Problem is, McKinney never said it.

.....read on. sorry about the weird puncuation, but I can't get rid of it without screwing up other text. you have to read the link to make better sense

It took this long for someone to connect McKinney with her 'What did the President know and when did he know it' episode. I hadn't mentioned it before because it seemed so obvious.

6. Not so much a Palast blast, but...
This sort of thing:
According to NPR, her “loony” statement was made on the radio news show Counterspin. (Not incidentally, Counterspin is produced by an NPR competitor, the nonprofit Pacifica Radio Network.) I have the transcript; it’s on the web. Her charge that Bush knew about the September 11 attacks in advance and deliberately covered it up can’t be found.

is unfortunate.

When you say "It's on the web", give me a link.

Thats right. The quote from McKinney is a complete fabrication. A whopper, a fabulous fib, a fake, a flim-flam. Just freakin made up.

Hi, Lynette. My name is Greg Palast, and I wanted to follow up on a story of yours. It says, lets see, after the opening -- its about Cynthia McKinney -- its dated Washington byline August 21. McKinney's capitalized on the furor caused by Miss McKinney's suggestion this year that President Bush might have known about the September 11 attacks but did nothing so his supporters could make money in a war. Now, I have been trying my darndest to find this phrase . . . I can't. . .

Lynette Clemetson, New York Times: Did you search the Atlanta Journal Constitution?

Yes, but I havent been able to find that statement.

I've heard that statement--it was all over the place.

I know it was all over the place, except no one can find it and thats why I'm concerned. Now did you see the statement in the Atlanta Journal Constitution?

Yeah....

And did you confirm this with McKinney?

Well, I worked with her office. The statement is from the floor of the House .... Right?

So did you check the statement from the Floor of the House?

I mean I wouldn't have done the story. . . . Have you looked at House transcripts?

Yes. Did you check that?

Of course.

You did check it?

I think you have to go back to the House transcripts.... I mean it was all over the place at the time.

Yes, this is one fact the Times reporter didn't fake: The McKinney quote was, indeed, all over the place: in the Washington Post, National Public Radio, and needless to say, all the other metropolitan dailies--everywhere but in Congresswoman McKinney's mouth.

Nor was it in the Congressional Record, nor in any recorded talk, nor on her Website, nor in any of her radio talks. Here's the Congresswoman's statement from the record:

"George Bush had no prior knowledge of the plan to attack the World Trade Center on September 11."

Oh.

And I should say former Congresswoman McKinney.

She was beaten in the August 2002 Democratic primary. More precisely, she was beaten to death, politically, by the fabricated quote.

11. Repubs hate McKinney
They took her out of her seat once and hated the fact that she won the seat back. They will do anything to knock her out again. They are dusting the old 'she's a dangerous lunatic lefty' thing out of the closet again and using it to destroy her. It's what they do. (Ahm, they are ruthless bastards who will stop at nothing to get and retain power. What part of that do we not understand?)

19. Palast rocks, check out his other articles on McKinney and bush gold
http://www.counterpunch.org/floyd02152003.html
http://www.alternet.org/story/16172/
"...Did I mention to you that (ex-)Congresswoman McKinney is black? And not just any kind of black. She's the uppity kind of black. What I mean by uppity is this:

After George Bush Senior left the White House, he became an advisor and lobbyist for a Canadian gold-mining company, Barrick Gold. Hey, a guy's got to work. But there were a couple of questions about Barrick, to say the least. For example, was Barrick's Congo gold mine funding both sides of a civil war and perpetuating that bloody conflict? Only one Congressperson demanded hearings on the matter.

You've guessed: Cynthia McKinney.

That was covered in the . . . well, it wasn't covered at all in the U.S. press.

McKinney contacted me at the BBC. She asked if I'd heard of Barrick. Indeed, I had. Top human rights investigators had evidence that a mine that Barrick bought in 1999 had, in clearing their Tanzanian properties three years earlier, bulldozed mine shafts . . . burying about 50 miners alive.

I certainly knew Barrick: They'd sued the Guardian for daring to run a story I'd written about the allegations of the killings. Barrick never sued an American paper for daring to run the story, because no American paper dared...

=RE-LYNCHING CYNTHIA MCKINNEY by Greg Palast Monday, July 21, 2003

Holy shit! Writing about Cynthia McKinney is like a blind date with Godzilla. You don't really know what you're in for until you've walked through the door.

In "The Screwing of Cynthia McKinney," (to read the original article click here: http://www.gregpalast.com/detail.cfm?artid=229&row=1 ) I thought I'd perform a minor but laudatory public service: correcting a cruelly false statement by the New York Times, a fib repeating or repeated by other sources from National Petroleum Radio to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The baying of wolves followed my simply noting that the former Congresswoman's political career was utterly destroyed by bald statements, such as the one in the New York Times which stated,... =Notably, the Times' and NPR's reactions illustrated the illusion of an unbiased US press. The Times imperiously ignored my findings of their manipulation of photos, quotes and outright falsities. However, NPR scheduled me to appear on the network's own national media review program -- regarding my criticism of the Times. Then, when the producers read my story on NPR's own prevarications, NPR decided that the best debate is none at all -- "the story is too complicated and requires too much research time" NPR told me -- and I was yanked from the broadcast minutes before the recording. So God Bless America...

September 23, 2001-Present: 9/11 Skeptics Derided as Conspiracy Nuts
The first of many mainstream articles ridiculing 9/11 “conspiracy theories” is published. Early articles of this type generally deride Middle Eastern views blaming Israel. Later articles mostly deride Western theories blaming President Bush, and criticize the Internet and Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney for spreading these ideas. The title of one article, “Conspiracy Nuts Feed On Calamity,” expresses the general tone of these articles. An Ottawa Citizen article mockingly includes a Do-It-Yourself Conspiracy Theory section, where you can fill in the blanks for your own personal 9/11 theory. The article calls 9/11 conspiracy theories “delirious,” “dangerous,” and “viruses,” while admitting, “t’s true that some of the events surrounding the September 11 attacks are hard to explain.” Another article attempts to discredit theories that oil was a motive for the US to attack Afghanistan by interspersing them with theories that space aliens were behind the 9/11 attacks.

April 11, 2002: Congresswoman Suspects Bush Knew of 9/11 in Advance
Cynthia McKinney. House of Representatives

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D) calls for a thorough investigation into whether President Bush and other government officials may have been warned of the 9/11 attacks but did nothing to prevent them. She is the first national-level politician to do so. She states: “News reports from Der Spiegel to the London Observer, from the Los Angeles Times to MSNBC to CNN, indicate that many different warnings were received by the administration. ... I am not aware of any evidence showing that President Bush or members of his administration have personally profited from the attacks of 9/11. ... On the other hand, what is undeniable is that corporations close to the administration have directly benefited from the increased defense spending arising from the aftermath of September 11. The Carlyle Group, Dyn-Corp, and Halliburton certainly stand out as companies close to this administration.” McKinney’s comments are criticized and ridiculed by other politicians and the media. For instance, Congressman Mark Foley (R) states, “She has said some outrageous things but this has gone too far. ... Maybe there should be an investigation as she suggests—but one focused on her.” Senator Zell Miller (D) says her comments were dangerous and irresponsible. An editorial in her home state calls her the “most prominent nut” promoting 9/11 “conspiracy theories.” One columnist says she is possibly “a delusional paranoiac” or “a socialist rabble-rouser who despises her own country.” White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said McKinney “must be running for the hall of fame of the Grassy Knoll Society.” One month after McKinney’s comments, the Bush administration comes under fire after reports reveal it had been warned five weeks before 9/11 about possible al-Qaeda plane hijackings, and McKinney claims vindication. She will lose reelection later in the year, but win her seat back in 2004.

18. McKinney votes against HR 4939:
McKinney votes against HR 4939: Republicans Seek to Confound Iraq and Katrina

"The only tie that binds Iraq and Katrina is the money Halliburton will get!" March 16, 2006

The Republicans are at it again, twisting and confounding the issues, this time by making support for the hurricane survivors conditional upon support for the Administration's "long war." The Republicans have missed the boat. The critical moment to act in an effort to assist hurricane survivors is long overdue, for just yesterday, FEMA evicted the last of some 40,000 families of hurricane survivors from temporary housing assistance with no plan to transition them to more permanent housing. Throwing mothers and children out on the street while lining the pockets of the wealthiest corporations; that is how Republicans do disaster relief, and I will not condone it.

http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/ga04_mckinney/pr_060316_hr4939.html

=Congressional oversight of Pentagon contracting has steadily eroded. Instead of doing its job, the Republican Congress keeps turning a blind eye to the recurring pattern of fraud, corruption, and abuse within the military contracting system. American citizens as voters and taxpayers must say "no more." No more corruption; no more waste, fraud, and abuse.

No more no-bid contracts in the Gulf Coast at the exclusion of minority-owned and small businesses. No more supplemental requests for an endless war with that helps no one but the friends of the Bush Administration. No more corporate profiteering from war and disaster. It is time to demand that government put the needs of its citizens first. I do that today.
