Lawmakers did Latinos a big favor

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist should be flooded with thank-you notes from Latino leaders and Democrats after Latinos nationwide were mobilized to march for comprehensive, compassionate immigration reform. The members of Congress, through their hunt-them-jail-them-boot-them-block-them immigration proposals, have galvanized Latino immigrants and activists.
Sensenbrenner's and Frist's fear-mongering have roused U.S. citizens and the undocumented to take a careful look at this country's view of immigration. Is immigration a path to the American Dream or the American Nightmare? The immigration fight has awakened Latino youths and adults from their political somnolence.
Throngs of Latino youths walked out of schools and descended boldly on the main streets of Dallas and Fort Worth, shouting "Viva Mexico!" and waving U.S. and Mexican flags. A school of the streets was in session, with teens teaching parents how to raise their heads and voices. A few parents among them nodded approvingly and said that their children made them proud.
They were motivated by well-placed insults, especially at the undocumented parents of children born in this country..
