Paul McCartney was never a student at the Liverpool Institue for the Performing Arts. McCartney founded the institution along with George Martin. He did however attend the now defunct grammer school, the Liverpool Institute for Boys which occupied the same building but that would have been a very different experience for the students.

If either Rice or The New York Times think that McCartney spent his formative years at LIPA or anything like it then they're deluded.

Macca seems to be on the right side of the issue now, but that song is definitely ill-considered to say the least. He admits that he was a little caught up in the hysteria of the time, and certainly any intelligent person who was in their right mind would leave "God" right out of it, given the sensitivities involved.

It's a shame that the American right-wing has reduced the word "freedom" to something on a par with "truthiness" - a barely concealed code for a simple-minded, jingoistic bullshit worldview - and McCartney seems to feel the same way. Freedomlicious (TM) Freegasms (TM) of Freedomosity (TM), as they might say on whitehouse.org.

The main problem with the song is that he obviously rushed it out, so it sounds like he wrote it as he went along; I mean, those are just some really crappy lyrics. They sound like a 12-year-old that's just discovered Bob Dylan.
