More roses? Any ideas? I wonder if a visual like the roses would have an impact of some of our Dem Senators that are on the fence?

54. I don't think we can do that
I think that might be actually specifically against campaign finance law. I'm not sure, but I do recall something about that the lawst time around.

I left the typo in because it's cute and furry.

Seriously.

Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 04:17 PM by calipendence
There's one site I found that were mad in China (probably should avoid those, even though they are cheap).

Here's another site for flags:

If we can give him American flags perhaps the following:
http://www.anthemflag.com/itemdetail122.htm (a whole range of miniature flags)

Alternatively, if we can give him this, how about Democrat flags:
http://www.anthemflag.com/itemdetail1302.htm (a dozen 4"x6" for $46.23)

Perhaps, like Barbara Boxer and Helen Thomas did, this would be mostly for him to stand next to initially with the huge array of flags he'd stand next to for pictures and maybe just one big flag for him to stay within campaign finance limits. Maybe afterwards we could have them forwarded onto the families of soldiers who died there. Maybe give him a list of these soldiers' names (and addresses if we can get them) that we'd send them to or another organization that can send them to them for us with postage and packaging already provided. If we could get one flag for each family that has lost a soldier out there, that would be AWESOME! Perhaps have mailers with postage and addresses already printed on them that could be sent from Feingold's office (courtesy of us!)

Current count of American soldiers dead in Iraq (2332)

For a flag for each soldier buying the $6.48/dozen pack that would be 195 (perhaps 200 by the time we send them to him). If we got 200 dozen packs that would be for (2600 soldiers - he could give more over time as more are added in the coming weeks)

$1702.00 - flags -- (200 * $6.48) + shipping ($406)
$1300.00 - mailers - (2600 * .50)
$500.00 - address labels
$1352.00 - shipping - (2600 * ($.39 + .13)) (13 cents non-machineable surcharge assuming one ounce or less)
----------------------
Roughly $4854.00

This is a rough estimate (and I've certainly no looked for cheapest stuff. But the question is if DU could raise $5000.00 to put these together. Perhaps we need to add in some sort of thing to stand these flags in when they're around Russ for the picture.

Then afterward, we need some group of folks to help address the flags and send them c/o Progressive Patriots to the various soldiers, which might imply that we know their addresses. If there's an agency that could send them for us that does have these addresses, then perhaps get all of these mailers put together so all they would have to do is print out the address on labels and stick them onto the packages.

Perhaps add the photo to each flag we mail out to let the soldiers and their families know who cares about average Americans like Russ does!

Of course then one of these would be going to Cindy Sheehan!

I'll probably send Russ more cash (already sent him $20.08 earlier) too. But just giving him cash doesn't provide the publicity that standing for a photo in front of a lot of donated flowers (or flags!) will do for him. I think more than anything else now, he needs that publicity of showing that Americans are behind him! That will be his weapon to club these other do nothing Democrats into submission with!

2. Let's do something!
I think this is a great idea. I've called his office to express support (though I'm not a constituent) but something that would get a little press would be excellent.

I don't have any ideas (yet) but am game. I didn't get in on the flowers for Helen, so I need to make up for that.

94. $17.76 to Prog. Patriots Fund and send a message---"thanks from a DUer" to
russ@progressivepatriotsfund.com

Here's what I got after sending in my $17.76:

Dear Wordpix,
Thank you for your recent contribution of $17.76 to the Progressive Patriots Fund. Your support will enable me to be a part of a larger national effort to build the Democratic Party throughout America.

The challenges far too many Americans face every day did not go away with the past election. I will continue to give voice to those who believe we must work to provide health care for all Americans, protect and create jobs, ensure fiscal responsibility, and fight terrorism while also protecting our freedoms.

In both so-called red and blue states, people have a voice that needs to be heard. People in every state want a dialogue that moves beyond the electoral partisan politics and ideology that divide us.

That is why I intend to help begin a dialogue about how we move forward as a country united by the values we share and the challenges we face together.

Once again, I sincerely appreciate your support, and look forward to working with you and others as we rise to meet the challenges that lie ahead. I know that with your help we will succeed.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold
United States Senator

Everyone donate $17.76 to the fund online, and let me know so I can make a list of contributors. Will present to him at a public meeting (press notified) in the next week or two, perhaps along with flowers or some other symbol of appreciation.

58. Hey, sunflowers are a great symbol and would counter giving flowers to a
guy. That should get some press and make nice photos.

Feingold for Prez does have ways you can help with the Swiftboating now in progress as the Repigs have bought airtime all across Wisconsin to lie that Feingold does not want to allow the heroic bush who is protecting us from the terrorists and against benedict arnolds like Feingold who dare to criticize the king during wartime --- really they are doing this now and the Russ website below asks that we write the media correcting the lie that Feingold does not want to allow any wiretaps of terrorists.

8. How much does a billboard cost - ideally somewhere close to the
Capital so that each and every Congress person has to look at it when they arrive to work. Just a simple little reminder that we are not going to forget, we are not shutting up and sitting down and we will be a major force and they can either be with us or against us. My main message would be to the Dems but would have the advantage of putting each and every politician on notice. A simple "Thank You Russ Feingold" brought to you by the people who care about America.

Remember the billboards that went up to "thank" the Hollywood liberals for putting Chucklenuts in office? I want the message to get to the DLC, the DNC, DCCC that we are no longer grassroots - we are the mainstream of the Democratic party and they need to get their asses on board with us.

We could all make a joint contribution. That would be a lot of cash fast.

No flowers or anything else for Russ. He needs the cash to do what he already knows needs to be done. That will do more than anything else we could do - except to support him by encouraging the other Dems to get the lead out and start doing the right thing.

56. Great idea... In the meantime, download the audio of Feingold's Censure
Hearings from his Senate website and join Russ for Prez and post on his forums. We really do need to show support and while I think he would love bouquets of flowers or flags and the front page of DU like Helen has-- I think they lack of any comment from him on the betrayal of the Dems in not showing up for his historic hearing shows he must be depressed so right now send him and email, download from his site or look up some of the excellent material on his Senate site about his policy views and loads of comments about the articles on Russ for Prez would also cheer him up nicely.

I went to Harkin's website and he had already taken down his article in favor of Censure. I think BFEE was very busy blackmailing, threatening and bribing or some combination of all three to every single Democratic senator and every single Democratic Senator voted yes to the "Patriot" Act two weeks ago without Feingold's amendment that would have preserved some of our rights.

What caused the dems to flip flop on that one from their brave stand in December? Feingold won't back down to the BFEE threats and for that we should show support now in every way we can.

his excellent article for Censure, smack dab on the front page of his official Senate site. Went back today, and no sign of it or even how to find it if it had been archived. No comment on Harkin's website on the Dems on the Judiciary committee who did not show up for the Censure Hearing. It is like Russia or 1984 with news that is disapproved of by the Politburo being airbrushed out like those in disfavor being airbrushed out of the photos with stalin. Creepy, crawly.

62. How about a santa sack full of checks and letters to Russ
I live in Madison (where he lives and has an office), so count me in on helping to deliver whatever is decided if it will be done here.

I like the idea of sending roses being a Democratic Underground tradition. Flowers make a great photo op and show of support.

Honestly - the more I've thought about this, the more I think the right thing to do is to support the progressive patriots fund. We could do this as individuals who are part of Democratic Underground rather than as a pooled contribution to keep it less complicated.

So how about a nice bouquet of roses or sunflowers or whatever AND a santa sack full of checks and letters to Russ telling him how much we appreciate him?

or a check tree. Get a large ficus and attach donation checks to it. We could have it delivered with the Dkos sunflowers. You'd have the visual impact of the flowers combined with the powerful message to other Senators that our donations are going to the people that stand up for us.

edited to add: instead of calling it a money or check tree we could call it a Censure Bush and get a ficus that has a more shrub-like look to it.

79. just my .02, but
with helen, flowers were so appropriate.

she is not a politican, not running for anything, but still standing up for truth, and the american people. flowers expressed our love and appreciation for her courage and patriotism.

for feingold, he IS a politician, he IS running for something (either to stay in the senate, OR hopefully for president), AND he IS standing for truth, and the american people, but can only do it if he is still in office.

helen made the gracious gesture of donating her flowers to veteran hospitals.

would that work with sunflowers? it just doesn't seem like an efficient use of the reward.

but a donation, of the exact same amount (or ending with the exact same cents - 25.77, 50.77, etc), all done in a matter of a couple of days, with all who can, getting that info out to the media, it COULD work. and with the realization that it is NOT a one-time offer, it could have the "two by four between the eyes" affect, with $$ signs circling their heads, instead of stars....

the politicans, who are ALL money hungry, WOULD get wind of it.

maybe dailykos could do the sunflower thing, and du could do the money thing.... i'm happy that dailykos is also trying to show support for those who deserve it. the combo two-fer could really work.

we little grassroots people have got to get the attention of the politicians. money ALWAYS gets people's attention.

again, just my .02.

to have $$$ delivered at the same time as the flowers!! kinda to show collaboration? I like the above idea about the ficus money tree, but that would entail collecting individual checks or cash donations, and I am not sure about the logistics of that. Maybe, the ficus with one donation check collected thru Paypal?? I don't know? Suggestions?

108. if it is checks on the ficus tree
that seems doable. but i am certainly not the one that is going to make any kind of decision. just thinking out loud....

it's just that credit card/paypal donations, with recognizable amounts, would be easier for all involved.

but the ficus tree with checks would be very symbolic, especially if it is actually covered to bursting with checks. maybe several trees?

but, (brain fart), could it not be said that they were fake checks, just for show? and you know that's what they would say, in spite of all backup lists, copies, etc.

i'd still play. it's just the realization that everytime cash is involved, regardless of the good intent/cause, SOMETHING happens to tarnish the whole thing.

some people just can NOT pass by an easy opportunity...

know what i'm sayin?.....

and I didn't hear any negatives. If there was a way to get someone to just collect the checks, MADE OUT to PPF, then we could get them all pinned on the 'Censure bush' and delivered at the same time as KOS sunflowers. Pamela, in MD, said she would be willing to go to DC to deliver it.

95. crazy suggestion
ok - seems we want to send flowers, donations, tacos to a bunch of different people and causes...

at one place I worked, we would throw in $1.00 a week for what we called a sunshine fund. This was just amongst the employees. when it was a birthday, wedding, funeral, anniversary or other special occassion we would use $x and buy that person flowers, dinner or whatever

here's my suggestion - we form a Sunshine Fund. Get maybe 5 people together to be a "review" committee

we ask people to submit names/causes and why this person or cause should get some money or flowers or whatever.

---Who/What cause
---why they should get it
---send flowers/money/tacos or other

every "x" days the review committee goes through the nominations, selects say 5 names/causes - posts them, then we vote on which one gets something from the sunshine fund. Then we post the results and have a week or two of asking for donation.

110. I wouldn't go
for things like donating to a political campaign - that would put us in the category of a PAC or 527 or something similar and would require waaaaaaaaaaaayy more work than I think people are willing and able to do

We could set up some guidelines as to who/what would be awarded with what

for example - alot of us are mad as heck at the apologists in the Dem party. We could set a guideline that recognizes only those who show some backbone and spine without later apologizing

another example - recognition for journalists who ask tough questions during a press conference and follow it up in their articles

or for a whistle-blower or ordinary person who takes a stand

something along those lines? I'm just throwing things out there to give people something to think about

online postcards that we could print and/or like I do keep a small stack of Patriotic postcards next to your PC, then everytime someone does something Good and/or honest hit him/her with a postcard campaign. Its cheap, easy and more people who may not be able to afford to kick in $$ for flowers, would be able to get involved.

My two cents.

and press can be notified in advance (but they will probably be there anyway).

I think "thank you" gestures are best delivered quickly - if we are thanking him for the censure resolution it isn't a bad idea to do it by next weekend.

I am open to suggestions, although I've already volunteered to do this. I can do something in WI, not in Washington. If people want Washington, there is nothing for me to undo, but I can't go to Washington so someone else will have to step up.

I know from experience that these discussions can go on forever and ever without a consensus...

If Feingold runs in 2008 we'll be sending wheelbarrows full of money. At least I will (if I can locate wheelbarrows full of money). A presentation such as the one done for Helen would generate lots of publicity and show the world that contrary to the blah, blah, blah on MSM and the lack of interest from other Democratic leaders, vast numbers of Democrats (and others) support Feingold, censure and all the other things they try to convince us we don't care about.
