FEMA to expel volunteers from Gulf Coast
In another dizzying twist in the alternate reality in which FEMA operates, the organization is moving to close camps housing thousands of volunteers helping with recovery efforts in the New Orleans area.

In a story reported by WWL-TV's online site but not picked up by the Times-Picayune, FEMA has announced that tent sites housing over 3,000 volunteers will close April 10 and 11. "FEMA originally had contracts for about the last six months to operate three camps in the New Orleans areas, and the contracts run out mid-April,” said FEMA representative Leo Skinner.

“Right now the biggest issue for us, especially coming up this summer when every youth group in the country wants to come down here, is where are we going to house them, where are we going to put them, where are we going to feed them?” questioned Aaron Arledge with the Louisiana Baptist Convention.

“The tent cities are critical in maintaining that level of volunteerism. If they are shut down or they go away, we’re going to have two alternatives. We’re either going to lose hundreds of hard working, willing volunteers, or we’re going to have to scramble to find other housing for them,” said Jim Pate with
Habitat for Humanity.

The only other media coverage has been by the Christian Broadcasting Network and a posting/discussion thread on the liberal political site TPM Cafe. Many of the volunteers come from church groups or liberal action groups, two groups not used to sharing showers and cafeterias...

The rest here on Wet Bank Guide.

1. "Not used to sharing showers and cafeterias..." ?
How much adjustment does a cafeteria require of these folks, anyway?

And since FEMA obviously has failed miserably to provie support, it seems as if these church groups are doing FEMA's job. In this one instance, if 17-year-olds are doing part of the government's job, they should get part of the government's pay.

At least they showed up.

12. Yeah, they are.
I did stuff in my youth group and later my Christian college that entailed sharing facilities with other groups. It's not a problem. Heck, for the St. Louis flood clean-up in 1993, we all slept on the floor of a high school hallway in sleeping bags and had to share the girls locker room with hundreds of other girls. It all worked out fine.

I don't think they want the money, though--give that to the people still trying to rebuild. They need it more.

14. Hi, knitter4democracy. It sounds to me like your experience was
similar to what some of these folks may be having, and if it's like yours, it's a noble thing, and it also sounds like you handled deprivation beautifully. It really does. Hats off to sacrifices like that.

Also agree with you wholeheartedly on the money part.

44. It's just what we all should do.
I remember sitting cramped in the back of a van for hours only to sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor when we got there. Then, when we got to the site, it was frankly scary. I had never seen filth like that--flood waters up to the rafters, and we had to gut it all. There were fish in the walls and black gook everywhere.

I think of that all the time now after Katrina--how those people need a lot of people helping them.

21. Ports open, Oil & gas back over 80% of capacity
Mission accomplished.

The million survivors of Katrina and Rita are collateral damage in their march to the sea. Those that vote Red (Mississippi gulf coasters) get five times the aid. NOLA and associated areas, well, too damn bad, but we can't send any money to you good Red folks in St. Benard and St. Tammany and Plaquemine cause of all those untrustworthy dusky folks down there.

Calcasieu Cameron? Is he that Cajun comic, you know, the "how y'all are?" guy?

Only in the last instance, the survivors of Rita, is it just plain old incompetence and cluelessness I believe.

28. five times the aid in mississippi
what's scary is you go over there, as i did last week, and they've done fuck-all repairing gulf coast mississippi either

five times the aid is still not enough

i hear most folks in cameron and plaquemines have given up on any chance of return

st. bernard is not giving up, i would say many or most of those folks have surprising reserves of savings (blue collar but not a high spending lifestyle and extended families who are pooling money) and they seem to be buying homes in st. tammany and putting up as many family members as possible and just digging in and refusing to be disappeared

I am going to piss some people off, but one of my next blog posts will be that any efforts to protect land east of NOLA should wait to next year, for focus on getting the protection in place for the core of NOLA, where people are back.

In case you're from St. Bernard, before you flame on, please read this:

Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 01:41 AM by file83
...which means that FEMA's budget could get reduced next year. Why pay FEMA to do what others volunteer and do for free? So FEMA's solution is to kick the volunteers out so that FEMA can be the only option left. That way they can ask for more money in next years budget package.

Government is sick like that. Just ask Sibel Edmonds about her experience within the FBI.

18. WWL-TV is an authoritative news source
The CBN is, well, at least they pretend to be news, so the fact that they have a story tells me there's a story there, even if I wouldn't normally rely on them as a source.

I'm hoping that a few former colleages in journalism who now work at the Castle Newhouse, whom I know read Wet Bank Guide, will wonder this themselves.

22. I haven't seen where FEMA actually said they were kicking
tent city people out. I have only seen conclusions drawn. I am no fan of FEMA, but it is a leap to conclude that because FEMA says their lease is up in mid April, that the tent cities are going to close.

Can you provide more convincing info? It could just be that FEMA will renew the agreements.

Again, WWL-TV says the camps are scheduled to close, won't commit to extending them, and have informed people to prepare to clear out.

Go follow the TPM link from the original Wet Bank Guide story.

19. Calcasieu and Cameron are the forgotten story
Everything in New Orleans, and then the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Nobody remember that Rita leveled much of two parishes. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of sympathy for NOLA west of, oh, the 17th Street Canal. It's too damn bad, cause we're all in this together. And with a name like Folse, well, mine came up from LaFourche but we're all kin to some extent.

The next successful politician will be the one who can tie together the votes of the metro NOLA area--Orleans and suburban--along with St. Tamanny (which is of course part of suburban NOLA) with those of the southwest.

The only caveat I have is that the last sucessful politician to pull of something like that was named Huey Long, riding the results of the 1927 flood. Given our history, we have to be careful what we wish for. But some good, honest populist (little p) anger put to good use wouldn't be a bad thing.

people who are there to help, but continues to NOT take action themselves, to help.
Bodies of victims (of Katrina and the gov't) continue to be found, mountains of debris remain.
So much is left to be done, but all FEMA cares about is chasing out those who are willing to do the work.

and now they want to bring the volunteer effort down to THEIR level, rather than taking a cue from the volunteers and RAISING their (the government's) level to match the volunteers. These folks are there because they care about their brother and sister citizens, they care about what's happened in the Gulf region, and now FEMA wants to send them away? Fuck that shit!

It may not do any good, but I say let's slam FEMA with calls and emails and letters about this, and demand they let the tent cities stay. Let the volunteers keep doing what they're doing -- helping in ways this screwed up agency can't seem to do!

experiment to push the envelope of Government control within our own borders! No one wants to talk about New Orleans and how fucked up it still is. We all KNOW what's going on, but don't want to face the ugly truth: Our gov't is conducting a large experiment on using a "disaster" to transform society.

They have displaced the residents, taken away their property rights, supplied disinformation about how they orchestrated the "failure" with Michael Brown being the 'fall guy' (that was a test in and of itself), FEMA is now kicking out the volunteers trying to help the Gulf Coast recover, and the Government is trying something that has never happened before on U.S. soil: proposing the disbandment of a police district and replacing them with the PRIVATE MERCENARY GROUP "Black Water".

Yeah, like I said, they are destroying America from within. I just wonder, what other disasters will follow this prototype?
