The only reason that Russert was hard on McCain is because he is preemptively knocking McCain down for 2008. Whatever McCain thinks, he will NEVER get the nomination, and no amount of pandering will ever change that fact. He is trying to be supportive to Bush now in exchange for nomination in 2008, but when that time rolls around, he will get stabbed in the back, just like 2000. This MTP appearance is just the start. I wouldn't expect Russert to be this tough on the real Bush loyalists.
