I need to track an IP
I suspect there a stalker is visiting my blog and posting comments.

I have a range of IP addresses and similar email addresses, but nothing solid. (The alleged stalker posts anonymously, but I require they leave an email.)

I know that it's next-to-impossible to get a specific home address from an IP without a warrant, but I was wondering if there is a way to confirm they are all coming from the same city and/or computer.

Thanks for your help.

1. Have you put "site meter" on your blog?
Go to http://www.sitemeter.com and register there. You'll be surprised what you can learn about the people visiting your blog.

4. Yes.
But I have something even better:

The full IP from the server. :)

I just don't know how to find out where the IP is comming from.

5. I've had pretty good luck using
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm but they've been down more than up lately. Once you've got a basic location from them, you can refine it with a /whois from ARIN or the other regional listing hubs.

If Geobytes comes up completely empty (and you've tested your own IP number to make sure they're functional), you're dealing with somebody who has enough knowledge to use shell accounts and doesn't mind paying for the privilege.

Even shell account providers are starting to take cyberstalking seriously now, so if you manage to locate the shell account company, document the IP number, the date and the time and you may be able to get that account cancelled.

7. Try the "IPWHOIS Lookup" here:
3rd box down, center column.

9. Go here
http://www.arin.net/index.shtml and type in the IP number. It will tell you the provider, and roughly where they are located.

10. So mean to say that there is someone who is physically stalking you in
the real world AND you think that same person is posting anonymous comments at your blog?

Or do mean to say that this person is ONLY stalking you in the internet and posting anonymous comments at your blog?

What exactly do you mean?

11. I don't want to say anyhitng until I can back it up with hard data
But if I'm correct, it's going to make one hell of a good blog entry.

The lesson for would be stalkers: Don't harras someone on their own website, especially if that someone is a blogger with access to the server-level logs.

It's a bit like breaking into a house and leaving your wallet behind.

13. Unless, of course, they are hiding behind several proxy servers...
But it sounds like this isn't the case with your stalker. Good luck and I hope you catch him/her/them.

15. Oh, it's a "them" - I can say that much.
If I'm right: I plan to take at least one Republican candiate for congress down Kaloogian-style.

16. To stop the comments
I use Haloscan in premium mode. Yes it costs but you can put all comments in 'moderation' mode and approve them on an individual basis. It has stopped ALL the comment spam...and a couple of stalkers...on my site and I love it, love it, love it.

14. I've always gotten good results from...
http://www.iks-jena.de/cgi-bin/whois

but now Opera refuses to load the page, and when I get Firefox to load it there is some worrisome legal hoopla going on.

It still works, though. Don't worry about the German-- results show up in English.

17. Stalker
Just out of curiosity why don't you get a lawyer to get a warrant. I think it would be the smart thing to do.

18. I can't go into detail until I finish the research however:
It's a bit different than a normal stalking case.
