Meth Addicted Baby Born Without Feet
On a personal note - The meth-addicted baby born on the San
Carlos Indian Reservation without feet brings back the horror stories of the thalidomide epidemic of the early 1960s. At the time, drug experts were unaware of the birth defects caused by the popular sleeping pill which was also used to treat morning sickness in pregnant women.

Mothers who had taken thalidomide during the first trimester had children with a wide range of deformities including babies with no arms, flippers coming out of the baby’s shoulders, limbless trunks with toes extending from their hips, and babies with just a head and torso.

I am praying to God the Creator the San Carlos baby is a fluke and an exception to the rule among meth-addicted babies who are currently being born and going to be conceived during this current era of rampant drug abuse.

But if the drug does cause serious birth defects in pregnant addicts, its use sends up another “red flag” that the current epidemic has to be brought under control as quickly as possible. This has become a national emergency equal to the terrorism threat - b.

1. Hmmmm...........
Why would you assume, with just the report of ONE child's case, that it is anything other than a fluke?

And, by the way, WHAT terrorism threat? You mean the one that George W. and his cronies are manufacturing out of whole clothe in order to scare the American people into keeping them in office?

2. Will this story be as valid as the ones about "crack" babies?
There was a huge brouhaha in the 80s and 90s about so-called crack babies who were born addicted to cocaine. The only problem? Crack babies were a myth.

Will this, too, turn out to be a myth?

4. Probably
because lots of babies are being born to meth addicted mothers and this is the first really grotesque birth defect they've linked to it.

Meth is a bad drug. We managed to get rid of most of it in the 60s and early 70s because better drugs were freely available and reasonably priced.

It's only bad because interdiction of pot and other relatively benign drugs has gotten too successful and has driven the price up.

11. Re. the crack babies 'myth', I must respectfully beg to differ....
I know a psychologist that would be beggin' to differ with you on that note - the first wave of crack babies are approaching the end of adolescence right about now, and many suffer a bucketful of psychological problems as a result of in-utero exposure to this drug. Would you venture also that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is non-existant? Anything is a poison in a high enough dose.

12. yeah really
meth has been around an awful long time, almost 100 yrs now

the baby was prob. exposed to some environmental pollutant and the real bad guys will quietly walk away while the cheap, easy target is shouted down

6. The real horror story here is that
most of the people responding to the topic have no idea of the horrors of meth addiction and living with a meth addict. Hope you all don't have to learn the hard way.

7. People are idiots. Defending meth, but they'll scream like
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 04:14 PM by amitten
wild if they think there's some teensy threat from some random environmental hazard.

If you're willing to defend something as destructive as meth (and I've seen the effects firsthand) I truly don't want to hear you bitch about pollution or pesticides or second-hand smoke.
