Am I too judgmental?

I live just outside DC in an area that is part-urban/part-suburban. Most of the houses on my street are fairly small, and most don't have driveways. A couple of houses have been torn-down and rebuilt with those oversized McMansions that don;t really fit on the lot.

Anyway, I've always been a bit quick to judge the people who buy those houses, assuming that they are people will way too much money on their hands, but not quite enough to buy a big house that also has property -- while still living close to town. Last week, one of them came home with the biggest, most audacious car I've ever seen. It's this GIGANTIC Hummer that is so big that they can't fit it in their two-car garage, so they park it on the street all the time. So now, I've completely got it in my head that these people are total selfish Republican assholes. Is that too much?

As an aside, anyone have any suggestions for lowering my blood pressure on this? Every time I drive by I get myself all worked up. What the hell could someone be thinking? Environmental issues aside -- which is hard to do -- why would someone think that something so damn audacious looks good? And the danger they pose to everyone else. . .

One thing that would make me feel better is the thought that they are getting dirty looks and nasty comments from other people. Think there's any chance of that happening????

On the downside, get used to that thing looking more like a neighborhood static display of excess, because the asshole cannot afford to fill 'er up.

i always try to use logic.

don't you hate how people who were born rich think they are such hot shit?

you know the type, trustfund brats, who have never had to work a day in their life. yet they are SOOOO much better, SOOOOO superior to the rest of us "little people".

they get on my last nerve.

well, a big dick is the same damn thing.

you didn't do squat to earn it, it was something you inherited. and if you HADN'T inherited it, there is not a damn thing you can do to GET it. and you feel SOOOOOOO superior to the rest of us 'cause you got it.

big fucking deal. i know a few lesbians who can do more with their tongue than you ever THOUGHT about doing with that BIG DICK of yours.

AND a thread in the lounge by our lovely, straight du ladies tended to put it into perspective.

5 inches is sufficient (after all, that 13 inch gargantuan monster has to go SOME place, and the only place that is REALLY built to take it is, guess where.... THE COLON!!! hahahah)

and, once again, according to the experts in the lounge, girth is MUCH more important in length.

so if you ain't got a beer can for dick, you are SORELY LACKING....!

so there. :-)

and i agree with retired af dem, more than a mouthful is a waste. i am so NOT into ruptured membranes. (sorry for the graphic description..)

edit for spelling

and the price is $4.50/gal! As they're still pumping, you can pull up to the next pump. get your 10-15 gal, pay for it, and give them a BIG GRIN as you drive off!

Bear in mind, you will probably go to that gas station once a week, and I bet you'll see them there every other day!!!!!!

9. There was a story in the local fishwrap a couple of weeks ago
about piggy pubbies trading in their H2s because they were tired of getting dirty looks and the one finger salute wherever they went.

My guess is that an equivalent reason is that anything that huge is a total pig to drive.

I have seen only 3 of those rolling obscenities in this town, and all 3 have been driven by trophy wife types who didn't look like they were enjoying the experience.

10. Think of them each time you are filling up at the gas pump.
And try to calculate how much MORE their bill would be.

Try imagine the mentality of someone who needs to play dress-up everyday they drive, and their desired dress-up role is driving dodging IEDs. Think of how nuts that is.

Then try to find the website with the Hummer Dealer in the LA area, whose inability to move the cars was caught in photos - on lot after lot after leased lot of Hummers (that they couldn't move) - then think of how upset new Hummerowner neighbor would be of how BEHIND the trends they are in terms of their timing to buy a Hummer (Oh, that is SOOO 2004).

Just a few thoughts that might lower the blood pressure though the acidity of the snarkiness might not taste too good.

While not as bad,the H2 and H3 are not as bad as the civilian version of the big military unit. Even though the "entry level" H3 is just a Chevy Colorado with a new body, they give off that aura that is very distintive to say the least.

I have the same visceral reaction when I see a hummer. On the road they get the bird whenever I can get my windown down fast enough. As far as your neighbor's hummer, best to lay low, I think. Odds are good he will get rid of it all on his own within the year. You wouldn't want to give him motivation to keep it out of spite.

what to do with. They may be doing well but are so locked into the greed/envy thing that they are living way beyond their means in order to persuade themselves that they have it made. Every time I see a Hummer, apart from snickering over the amount they must pay to fuel the thing, I see a frightened person behind the wheel.

Considering the cost to fuel, I also see a lot of frightened people selling the things!

38. I agree they make little more pollution than a passenger car, but
it's a specious argument.

If everybody in the USA would convert to a hybrid vehicle tomorrow, it would almost have no impact on world wide CO2 emissions. It would be a meaningless gesture in terms of real impact.

If my neighbor wants to drive a new Hummer, I have no real problem with that because he probably turned in a vehicle that was older and pollutes as much or more.

Plus the bonehead is paying a larger share of road taxes than I do.

49. Since I can't expect rational discussions
I'll ask you a simple question.

Just how does driving a Hummer kill a solider in Iraq based on thoughtful empirical factual evidence. No straw man arguments. No connect this dot to this dot to this dot and we have dead solder's in Baghdad's street.

The case can be made if we went there EXCLUSIVELY for oil, but since rational people know we are there for several different reasons depending on the conspiracy decoder ring the person is wearing that day.

All kidding aside, we are currently in Iraq for reasons ranging from maintaining stable oil markets (that worked out well, snicker) to building a regional hegemony dictated by US policy (PNAC) to one as simple as freeing 38 million people from a tyrant or as conspiratorially as Saddam tried to kill Bush daddy and pay back is a bitch.

Bottom line for me is simple: If Iraq didn't have a drop of oil in it, I still think we would be there. Regardless of who is driving a Hummer

51. Why should I answer your passive-aggressive questions on your terms?
Or are you really kidding?

Bottom line: We are there for the oil. There may be other reasons, but they are mostly related to controlling the flow of oil and maintaining the transaction currency in U.S. Dollars.

Nobody can refute this fact, though for over three years I have heard many people try.

On a side note, I am truly sorry you have family in or returning to Iraq - I know how you feel.

Anyone who can afford to own a Hummer is probably not overly concerned about what they pay for gas.

Are we prepared as a society to start determining by government fiat that nobody can own a higher fuel consumption vehicle?

If we aren't, then let the supply and demand principles determine the number of Hummer / large vehicles on the road.

Price goes up. Fewer big vehicles.

The difference is significant.

H2 and H3 are cars for posers. They are "sissy" cars dressed up in tough car drag.

An H1, especially from the first few model years, is one hell of a tough vehicle, and if you do serious off-roading or construction or other work in rough terrain, you cannot be faulted for owning one.

41. Well, I remember the H1s ( the real deal, Nat. Guard ones)
getting snowbanked-- during the extreme blizzard Denver experienced Halloween, 1997. I sat three days locked in at the Denver Airport watching newscasts and seeing all the southern suburbs with bumper-to-bumper stranded motorists along I-25. Park Meadows Mall was taken over by Nat. Guard for a staging area and they dispatched tons of these behemoths to try to go pull motorists out. Being heavy, heavy, heavy, they were far less likely to get through than jeeps and other more traditional 4wheel drive vehicles. So, I'm not convinced of their testosterone laden "invincibility." While little was particularly funny that long, long weekend, I must say I secretly smiled at all the Highlands Ranch (heavy Freeperland) H1 owners who thought they'd just cruise through anything...

and a local Green party member inherited one from his dad (his own secret shame. He kids that he has to walk everywhere because he is ashamed to park close to events) :)

SUV or Hummer does not necessarily mean neo-con. Sometimes it just means ego-maniac asshole!

58. Check if your street has weight restrictions
A number of cities have restrictions on the weight of vehicles that can travel in residential areas, and a Hummer just might violate them
